Syrah

Parentage: Offspring of Dureza & Mondeuse Blanche
Aliases: Shiraz, Hermitage, Antourenein Noir, Candive, Marsanne Noir...
Grape Color: Black
Regions: Rhone (France), California AVAs, Australia
Type(s) of Wine the Grape Produces:

Syrah. Shiraz. Sirac. Schiras. Marsanne Noir. The names can go on endlessly to describe one of the most powerful red wine-producing grapes in the world.

The irony here is that Syrah’s origins could give Carmen Sandiego a run for her international wallet. Syrah’s deepest rooted history lies in the Rhone region of Southwestern France, as the wines that made this varietal famous were from hermitage, located in northern Rhone. The name “Shiraz,” however, gained popularity in Australia where this dark-skinned varietal has long been heavily planted. The birthplace of Syrah is still unknown, with many legends linking together both its aliases, suggesting origins in Iran, Rhone, and Australia.

  • Yalumba Shiraz Barossa Patchwork 2008

    Snoothrank:

Has bright fruit offset by some earthiness. Finish was a bit short but was not over ripe flavours that some Aussie Shiraz have. Didnt as work as well with food for me as the other Yalumba wines that I tasted with it. Read More

  • Schild Estate Shiraz Barossa Valley Moorooroo Block 2007

    Snoothrank:

A classic big shiraz, which might benefit from a few more years in the bottle to temper a bit of a harsh alcohol-y taste when first opened (but which dissipates as it breathes). There's a lot a tart berry fruit, with some nice cedar-y and olive-y accents. Long rich finish. At the available under $20 pricing at many sources, it's a darned good ... Read More

    Snoothrank:

Inky black color, explosion of cherry, cassis, blackberry, and white pepper on the nose. Full cherry flavors, hint of plum, and prominent peppery notes. Leathery, full-bodied, amazingly smooth, long lingering tannins and a beautiful finish. Outstanding effort. Read More
