Type(s) of Wine the Grape Produces:

Syrah. Shiraz. Sirac. Schiras. Marsanne Noir. The names can go on endlessly to describe one of the most powerful red wine-producing grapes in the world.

The irony here is that Syrah’s origins could give Carmen Sandiego a run for her international wallet. Syrah’s deepest rooted history lies in the Rhone region of Southwestern France, as the wines that made this varietal famous were from hermitage, located in northern Rhone. The name “Shiraz,” however, gained popularity in Australia where this dark-skinned varietal has long been heavily planted. The birthplace of Syrah is still unknown, with many legends linking together both its aliases, suggesting origins in Iran, Rhone, and Australia.

  • hi!  my name is michelle.  i'm a physician in Phoenix, AZ.  i'm ... complexity & spice of a syrah, but much lighter in body.  who knew?  crappy Costco table grapes!  moved on to kits, and wow, we got some really great wines out of those (we didn't buy the cheapie stuff).  his daughter's school has chardonnay grapes growing on the fence around ... • R Wines Shiraz First Class 2007

this shiraz is really fruity, spicy, peppery, full of kick! it really needs to be paired carefully, though--it will overpower most things. it just begs for a really good deer sausage! Read More

  • Mitolo Jester Shiraz 2007

Nose: plums, sherry-esque alcohol, moss, but overall quite fruity.Taste: herby, smoky and earthy on the base of the palate, with plummy fruit on the top, all coupled with a blast of unbalanced sherry-like alcohol. A lagging, wet-dog-like finish. Overly tannic and quite underdeveloped, with an unbalanced acidity. Might improve with ageing. Decant... Read More

  • Qupe Central Coast Syrah 2007

The nose opens to a strong vegetable scent that portends more of a randomly ... of various veggies than of Syrah. Add damp black soil, new tires, prunes, green pepper, stewed fruits, and a mix of herbal perfumes. The palate seems off-key, combining green pepper, dirt, meat and wild raspberry in a blend of flavors that arrives at occasional h... Read More

  • Glaetzer Shiraz the Bishop 2004

Nose starts dark and dirty with metal, rust, fresh-cut grass, and tar dominating the medley of scents. But surprises await the patient, as bakers chocolate, blackberry, floral, and herbs emerge during the first two hours to brighten and enrich the aromatics. At one point, the odd mixture of aromas produced an image of a chocolate covered, rust... Read More

  • Charles Cimicky Shiraz Barossa Valley Autograph 2003

Strong scents of blackberry and dark chocolate, spices and florals, cayenne pepper and crème brule leap from the glass and mix in a never quite balanced medley of aromas. After three hours, oak, smoke and barbeque join the parade of perfumes. On the palate, blackberry, cedar, cayenne pepper, pomegranate, and figs intermingle without ever gaini... Read More
