Type(s) of Wine the Grape Produces:

Syrah. Shiraz. Sirac. Schiras. Marsanne Noir. The names can go on endlessly to describe one of the most powerful red wine-producing grapes in the world.

The irony here is that Syrah’s origins could give Carmen Sandiego a run for her international wallet. Syrah’s deepest rooted history lies in the Rhone region of Southwestern France, as the wines that made this varietal famous were from hermitage, located in northern Rhone. The name “Shiraz,” however, gained popularity in Australia where this dark-skinned varietal has long been heavily planted. The birthplace of Syrah is still unknown, with many legends linking together both its aliases, suggesting origins in Iran, Rhone, and Australia.

Syrah is used primarily for producing strong red wines Read more »

  • Andrew Rich Syrah Red Mountain les Vignes En Face 2006

This is wonderfully aromatic with hints of orange oil, pencil lead, pink peppercorn, soil, carob and licorice over dark fruit. In the mouth the initial rush of blackberry fruit is quickly corralled by deep tannic cut but the fruit fights through on the mid-palate to reveal deep, pure crystallized plum notes. The fruit and tannins dance across th... Read More

  • Feudo de Sartanna Nero Davola/Syrah

Smelled like blackberries, and perhaps melon. Had a fruity taste with soft tannins that developed into a warm, spicy pungency. Long finish with lingering pungency and cherries. Not a very complex wine. Read More

  • Jam Jar Shiraz Sweet Shiraz 2009

My Rating: As a fruit juice : 95 , as a wine 75.This stuff tastes like a fruit juice fortified with alcohol. Also the nose is well balanced nothing in the taste reminds you of a Shiraz. If you are not a fan of red wines and sip this stuff chilled in the summer it might appeal to you. Comparable to white Zinfandel !For me this wine is an insult. e... Read More

  • Jacob's Creek Shiraz Reserve 2007

Dry and woodsy on the nose with more wood than fruit. Sweet on entry with a loose, rather soft feel. There are nice sweet berry flavors accented with a touch of peppery spice but the tannins are drying and rob the mid-palate of its appeal. The finish is dry, woody and raw with light carob flavors. 78pts Read More

  • J. Lohr Syrah Paso Robles South Ridge 2008

Dark and jammy on the nose with lots of licorice, fennel seed, and green seed tones under lightly chocolaty fruit. This is really fairly soft in the mouth with little detail. The fruit is fairly intense, candied red cherry and plum with some Jolly Rancher acids in the back. Fruit-forward, easy to drink, formless and very short, not to mention a ... Read More
