Name of varietal: Roussanne

Common synonyms: Bergeron (Savoie), Barbin, Courtoisie, Fromental, Remoulette, Greffon, Rebelot, Roussette, Rusan Belyi, Rusan Blan

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to the Rhone region of France

History of the grape: Roussanne likely gets its name from the light brown color of its skin (“roux” in French). Roussanne is used throughout the Rhone and Southern France primarily as a blending grape. It’s one of the only white varietals, along with its wondertwin grape Marsanne, that is allowed in white Cotes du Rhone besides Viognier. It is also one of the blending grapes of Chateauneuf -du-Pape. In Savoie, where it is called Bergeron, it has a rare starring role in the aromatic Chignin wines. Roussanne is one of the original Rhone varietals that was brought to Australia in the 1880s and is now popular with the Rhone Rangers movement in California. Though it is a notoriously pesky grape to grow, it is still prized for its unique aromatics and acidity Read more »

  • D'Arenberg Rousanne Money Spider 2008

This is intense on the nose with notes of mango fruit, lanolin, flinty notes, white pepper and a bit of diesel, along with some very ripe/overripe apricot fruit. This is just as intense in the mouth and very ripe with mango and apricot fruit dripping all over the palate. This is a bit soft and certainly mouth-filling, but the flavors of overripe... Read More

  • Donelan White Rhone Blend Bennett Valley Venus 2009

Lovely and fragrant on the nose with smoky, almost flinty notes early on, joined by funky, sweet vegetal tones, some honeycomb, raw almonds and cider apple notes. Small on entry, this is pretty well focused with a tight core of honeyed, raw nut, cashew like flavors wrapped in a gauzy, soft lime cream. Not intense but very detailed on the palate.... Read More
