Pinot Grigio

Common synonyms: Pinot Gris, “white Pinot Noir,” (but not to be confused with Pinot Blanc, which is another grape entirely), Pinot Beurot (France), Rulander (Germany), Tokay d’Alsace,

Parentage of the grape: Burgundy as Pinot Gris in the 1300s.

History of the grape: Pinot Gris was planted in Burgundy, France as far back as the 1300s. It then spread through Europe, via Alsace, Switzerland and into Germany, eventually making it to Italy, where it was given the name Pinot Grigio. When Phylloxera hit Burgundy, Pinot Gris with its original characteristics was wiped out and the hybrids grafted with American stock to save the vines were never the same quality, so crops were left to mostly die out. But in the Alsace region, Germany and Italy, the hybrids fared much better and the grape was able to thrive. It was brought to Australia in the 1830s by James Busby, who is credited with being the “Father of Australian Wine.” It was eventually brought over to Read more »

Pinot Grigio on Snooth

  • This morning I was pontificating in the coffee shop about wine bottle labeling.  My buddy, being the the ex-lawyer type, asked a lawyer question.  Who monitors this stuff?I then realized that I had never heard of anybody (OK, I'm talking domestically, here.) being accused of say:Labeling a bottle as "Cabernet Sauvignon" and, then, being caught f... • Frogs Leap Chardonnay Napa Valley 2009

    Snoothrank:

I was blown away by this wine. It may be that others score higher or lower, but ... ... it's different - oh say pinot grigio different. Rick was the first to say so - I cautiously waited, but except for the lemongrass throughout and small creamy notes on the nose this is totally PG. A golden hay liquid with green melons, grapefruit, lemongrass... Read More

  • Barefoot Pinot Grigio 2014

    Snoothrank:

Crystal clear, and coloring that is grassy/yellow in tone. Aromas of apple, pear and clean citrus waft about and flavors follow suit.....crisp, clean fruit, refreshing soft acidity and a light, slightly carbonated mouthfeel makes this a simply excellent value Pinot Gris that is fully deserving of the consistent awards bestowed upon it! • Surprised nobody's mentioned him so far so I'll throw Gravner into the ... ... Italico, Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio. The Ribolla wine comes from the autochthonous Ribolla Gialla varietal. Rosso Gravner is a blend of merlot and cabernet sauvignon. The reviews are mixed - some rate his whites as the best in Italy."  Then there's the Beckham Es... Read More

  • King Estate Acrobat Pinot Gris 2014

    Snoothrank:

Another King Estate success story with pinot gris. This bottle was easily the best entry level pinot gris I've ever had. Fresh in a word. Melon, tropical fruits, apple (Granny Smith) and juicy acidity make this a perfect sitting on the deck on a warm spring or summer day quaffer. Drink now - Paul 88 points Read More

  • Campanile Pinot Grigio Friuli Grave 2009

    Snoothrank:

This was tart upon opening and needed a little time to settle down into the "normal" PG profile that is uniquely Campanile. By that I mean there is a saline note to the finish that stands out from the pear, melon and citrus finish. I like because it's different. Drink now - Paul (11/21/12) 87 points Read More

  • A few days ago I participated in a tasting/pairing event that featured white wines. One of the wines was Chablis, and, while discussing this one, the facilitator stated that it was fermented in steel and had never seen oak.  I asked if that was common for the region and he responded that it was absolutely the case, and was so for all white wines...
