Petite Sirah

Name of varietal: Petite Sirah

Common synonyms: Durif, Petit Syrah, Petit Sirah, Petite Syrah (and other combinations thereof)

Parentage of the grape: Peloursin and Syrah from Rhone, France

History of the grape: Petite Syrah is often confused with its parent grape, Syrah, but it has been identified as a separate descendant. It was developed in the 1870s by a French horticulturalist, Francois Durif, who crossed Peloursin and Syrah in attempts to create a hybrid that was resistant to the powdery mildew (Oidium) epidemic. But it failed to meet quality standards and was still susceptible to bunch rot so it never quite caught on except as a blending grape. In the 1880s, California wine-maker Charles Melver planted it in his Mission San José vineyard and is credited as being the first to change its name from Durif to Petite Syrah. From there, the grape gained local popularity, particularly in the 1940s when efforts were made to produce wines with bolder flavor Read more »

  • Orin Swift "The Prisoner" Napa Valley Red Blend 2009

    Snoothrank:

Structured and layered, and well beyond it's supposed prime, this was great. Blackberry, dustiness, spice, dark cherry, mocha with tolerable tannins and great acidity. Just shows what cellaring properly can do. 92 points - drink now - Paul Read More

  • We had a meeting today to finalize (as best we could) the 2017 Northwoods Wine ... ...  with cabby, syrah, petite sirah, carbono added to the zin.  As a result there are, obviously, different layers and aromas.  However, the same blackberry and dark cherry are both present and well done.  Actually, I was blown away the The Prisoner resonated t... • My admiration for Murrieta’s Well and their winemaker, Robbie Meyer, is ... 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Petite Sirah, 14% Petit Verdot, 10% Merlot, 9% Cabernet FrancThe 2013 vintage of The Spur was driven by Petite Sirah, so I was excited to see that Cabernet Sauvignon takes center stage in 2014.  This latest vintage is noted for its texture a... • Sometimes we get used to paying upwards of $100 for a nice bottle of wine from the wine shop.  Those are the 'good days' that we want to remember, but soon you notice your bank account is dropping faster than Trumps approval rating, so you start looking for more value-oriented wines that are tasty in their own right. This topic is all about value... • Teldeschi Petite Sirah Dry Creek Valley 1999

    Snoothrank:

I opened the bottle carefully (cork and age can be fickle friends) and then decanted it for about an hour. The wine is a rich, inky black at the center with bright ruby along the edges. The nose presents aromas of blackberry, plum and kisch, that just reminds me of many of the wonderful local Italian places in New York. The wine is an explosi... Read More
