Petite Sirah

Name of varietal: Petite Sirah

Common synonyms: Durif, Petit Syrah, Petit Sirah, Petite Syrah (and other combinations thereof)

Parentage of the grape: Peloursin and Syrah from Rhone, France

History of the grape: Petite Syrah is often confused with its parent grape, Syrah, but it has been identified as a separate descendant. It was developed in the 1870s by a French horticulturalist, Francois Durif, who crossed Peloursin and Syrah in attempts to create a hybrid that was resistant to the powdery mildew (Oidium) epidemic. But it failed to meet quality standards and was still susceptible to bunch rot so it never quite caught on except as a blending grape. In the 1880s, California wine-maker Charles Melver planted it in his Mission San José vineyard and is credited as being the first to change its name from Durif to Petite Syrah. From there, the grape gained local popularity, particularly in the 1940s when efforts were made to produce wines with bolder flavor Read more »

Petite Sirah on Snooth

  • Foppiano Vineyards Petite Sirah 2012

    Snoothrank:

Dark purple in the glass as you would expect from a PS. Very fruity noseof dark berries. Big hit of fruit on introductionsweeter than blackberry, more like blueberry. Not a blockbuster PS. Very light on both tannin and acid. More of an easy drinker. Very easily worth the $15 I spent on it. Read More

  • I was thinking that it was them, RCKR.  I think I read it in an e-mail ... Angeli Cuvee--a Zinfandel/Petite Sirah/Carignane/Syrah blend.  Is that in my wheelhouse or what? And, for what it's worth, Paul Limerick Lane is another winery that is moving higher on my list of favorites.  I've been buying from them for about a year, now, and have very... • Saved "Tattoo" Red Blend 2012

    Snoothrank:

The winemaker's notes call this a big powerful wine. Not so much. It does open to add depth and some strength, but it takes a good 45-60 mns. to open fully and the end result was a red berry driven wine with medium tannins, smallish pepper notes and a decent ending acidity. Honestly don't think this worth the nearly $25 it takes to buy locally. ... Read More

  • D--They are impressive, those Chianina.  The Chiangus are interesting, ... ... to try the 2009 Burnsini Petite Sirah that I just purchased on my ramble last week, and pitted it against a 2009 Bell Massa Ranch Petite Sirah.  Our guests seemed to like the Burnsini more, as did I at opening, but it devolved into a fruit bomb with air--glad I didn... • D, not everything winds up on the internet, at least not via the usual ... ... either.  I wanted some Petite Sirah just as an example of something that is very much our own grape.  The New Clairvaux has a little more interesting story: The place is a working Cistercian abbey.  Of course, it was the Cistercians who initially classified the vine...
