Fiano

Common synonyms: Apiana, Apiano, Fiana, Fiano di Avellino, Fiore Mendillo, Foiano, Latina Bianca, Latina Bianca di Barletta, Latino, Latino Bianco, Minutola, Minutolo, and Santa Sofia

Parentage of the grape: Unknown

History of the grape: Fiano hails from Campania, where much of Italy’s viticultural heritage remains preserved. The Romans used this grape to make a wine called Apianum high in the forested hills around the town of Avellino. Though Fiano is grown throughout the area, all the way down to the coast, these hills are still where the best Fiano comes from. Indeed, people say that those woods are the source of Fiano’s distinctive wild, piney, herbaceous flavor. In 1980, the area was hit by an earthquake, which destroyed its quaint, medieval wine towns. They still make wine from this ancient variety, however. Some producers have attempted to age Fiano in new oak, but most agree that it is too delicate for this treatment.

Fiano on Snooth

  • Guido Marsella Fiano di Avellino 2008

    Snoothrank:

This smells of mineral rich earth and bonfires, quartz with some lightly fried fruit and floral notes. In the mouth this is so focused and well defined. It's not a fruity wine offering up layers of quartz, mineral smoke and candewax over base notes of dried citrus peels but the beauty here is in the purity and length this wine brings tot he tabl... • I posted this question because someone on another thread referred to Merlots as "tannic" and I don't think of them that way.  But I also realize I am less sensitive to tannins than to, for example, acidity.  I have to stop and think about whether tannins are high or medium, although I can kind of quantify them if I stop and think.I think of tann... Seemed to me a lot like (unfortified) dry sherry. Both as to color and flavor. (I may write more later, because my single exposure so far is a glass at room temperature. Cooling might pump my rating up by one. Takes a while because my ration is one alcoholic drink per day. Cholesterol, you know.) Read More

  • Mastroberardino Fiano di Avellino 2009

    Snoothrank:

This is fairly fruity on the nose, and could be easy to dismiss with the prominent apricot fruit but further inspection reveals lovely fennel, honeycomb, and jasmine undertones. Rather lean on the palate, fresh and direct with an impression that is very similar to the aromatics, apricot with fennel edges and some light hazelnuts tones picking up... Read More
