I spent three beautiful spring days in May in the cellars of the Côte Chalonnaise and Mâconnais rather than in the sunshine. So it was the Chardonnays (and Pinot Noirs, of course) that brightened my days.

This can be an economical wine in both cash and calories: you can spend hours smelling it without ever bothering to taste it. It is exotically spicy with a full rack of baking spices fortified by crispy piecrust notes. Hardly short on fruit, it is packed with ripe apples, pears and nectarines. 93 pts
