Principato is a wine brand out of the Tre Venezie region (Verona/Trentino-Alto Adige/Friuli-Venezia Giulia) of Italy. The name means “Princely Realm” or principality, referring to the region itself where the wines are produced. This range of affordable wines is available in popular varietals and blends, such as Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot, Pinot Grigio, and Chardonnay. The Principato Rosato is a high-demand blush wine that has been popularized at Olive Garden restaurants.

A well-balanced, medium-bodied red with flavors of black cherry and dark berries. It has a nice dark purple color and an alcohol level of only 12%. Good value for the money. Read More

  • Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie Principato Vigneti 2009

I'm not enjoying this vintage as much as I did the 2008; finding it a little less round in the mouth and am not getting much flavor in the center. Still it's a nice, enjoyable wine and it's quite a find for the price (which at my local store is $6!) Read More

  • Principato Pinot Noir Provincia di Pavia IGT 2008

In the glass, light ruby to strawberry with brilliant highlights. The wine needs air to suggest characteristics of the grape; otherwise pours sharply acidic with alcohol, little fruit. When it mellows, strawberry returns with faint cinnamon. Finish is clean but unsatisfying. Needs food to balance rather than complement. Sharp cheddar will allow ... Read More

  • Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Delle Venezie Principato 2007

Unremarkable. I kept asking myself why an Italian wine maker would be playing around with Cab/Merlot blends, as if the Italians were going to improve on either the Chianti recipe or that of Bordeaux. It's flat, and boring. But not awful. Read More
