Parentage of the grape: likely indigenous to Germany

History of the grape: As with many varietals, exact details of Riesling’s origins are unclear. It is known that in 14th century Germany, attention shifted to white grape cultivation when it was obvious that red grapes weren’t up to snuff compared to those with more color and structure from neighboring countries. • Wittmann 100 Hills Dry Riesling Rheinhessen 2015

    Snoothrank:

Mineral steeliness, wet slate and lemon notes on the razor sharp, serious nose. A bit softer on the palate but still quite sharp, this brings notes of lemon and green melon, green apple and a bright acidity that keeps the palate zesty, minerally and fresh with a crisp refreshing body and a staccato finish. This 2013 Riesling was another clear-out from Grocery outlet, selling for $2.99 rather than the $10-12 it is supposed to sell for. At that price, it's a screaming bargain. I wish this were a bit drier, as it's lightly sweet, despite the label claiming it to be between moderately dry and moderately sweet. It would make a fine aparatif, as well... Read More
