Common synonyms: Rhineriesling, Johannisberger, Gentile Aromatique, Hochheimer, Rizling, Rheinriesling, Rieslinger, Reynai, White Riesling

Parentage of the grape: likely indigenous to Germany

History of the grape: As with many varietals, exact details of Riesling’s origins are unclear. It is known that in 14th century Germany, attention shifted to white grape cultivation when it was obvious that red grapes weren’t up to snuff compared to those with more color and structure from neighboring countries. The first written mention of Riesling is dated March 13, 1435 when Count Katzenelnbogen at Russelsheim bought six vines of Riesling from Klaus Kleinfish for 22 soldi. Snoothrank:

Intriguing cool tropical fruit aromas with banana, papaya and melon and floral notes of rose petal and honeysuckle. Brightly acidic in the mouth and leading with green apple and pear flavors, a hint of melon and a finish that's ever so slightly creamy with notes of lemon zest. Read More

  • Balthasar Ress Hattenheim Engelmannsberg Rheingau Riesling Trocken 2012

    Snoothrank:

Just starting to show the early stages of aging with petrol and sour apple notes on the nose, this very dry (trocken) Hattenheim Rheingau wine enters the mouth with a metallic tinge and some apricot flavours. The lack of any dob of sweetness on the finish may surprise some, but the wine is clean and refreshing if a little nervy. 90 points. Read More
