Flora

The appropriately named Flora, a cross of Gewürztraminer and Semillon, was developed by Dr. Harold Olmo, UC Davis’ legendary geneticist, as an aromatic varietal suitable for the hot growing conditions of California’s prolific Central Valley. The grape succeeded on the aromatic side of the equation, but has largely proven unsuccessful in warmer climes due to its inability to retain acidity in these conditions.

Ultimately failing to prove its worth as a suitable grape for the blended jug wine industry, Flora has demonstrated its potential as a varietal in the cooler conditions of New Zealand, where it is known to have produced some critically applauded and stylish wines in the 1970s. Unfortunately, Flora’s aromatic and full bodied wines seemed out of place with the popular market taste of the day. Failing to meet with widespread appeal Downunder, the variety was largely forgotten about until it resurfaced more than two decades later.

Flora on Snooth

  • Luigi Cecchi & Figli Chianti Classico 2009

    Snoothrank:

This flavorful wine has a strong flora taste. Although, I did not find this to be pleasant tasting, I could see others finding differently. My recommendation: if you like flora tasting dry reds, go for it. If not, stay away. Read More

  • Flora Springs Trilogy 2005

    Snoothrank:

Very big and very tasty. Rich, sweet pipe tobacco essence with delicate earthy-sweet accents complimenting ripe cherry and blackberry flavors. Nicely balanced and appropriately complex with lingering enjoyment for the palate. 2005 was a very good year for this Meritage. Read More

  • Halleck Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast Hillside Cuvée 2008

    Snoothrank:

It has a bright, spicy strawberry nose. Also has aromas of cranberry, red ... ... mixture of pepper, spice and flora, red fruit. Flavors of pomegranate, red fruits, baking spices, white pepper and some minerality. It's pretty and vibrant. Finishes a bit tart. Time should mellow that out.3/10/ Read More
