Flora

The appropriately named Flora, a cross of Gewürztraminer and Semillon, was developed by Dr. Harold Olmo, UC Davis’ legendary geneticist, as an aromatic varietal suitable for the hot growing conditions of California’s prolific Central Valley. The grape succeeded on the aromatic side of the equation, but has largely proven unsuccessful in warmer climes due to its inability to retain acidity in these conditions.

Ultimately failing to prove its worth as a suitable grape for the blended jug wine industry, Flora has demonstrated its potential as a varietal in the cooler conditions of New Zealand, where it is known to have produced some critically applauded and stylish wines in the 1970s. Unfortunately, Flora’s aromatic and full bodied wines seemed out of place with the popular market taste of the day. Flora on Snooth

  • I recently participated in a small blind tasting in which two $40 Cabernets ... plum, bitter chocolate and floral accent notes. There are some hard tannins here underpinning it all, and this has a lovely texture, rather broad but bright and a bit nervous in the mouth with a lovely flavor profile but it does drop off a bit quickly on the  finis... • Flora Springs Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

    Snoothrank:

Bright and fruity on the nose with lovely lift to the red plum, smoky oak, ... ... along with some peppery and floral nuances. This is young, a bit simple and with slightly unripe tannins but at the same time its fresh and bright and pretty easy to drink. Not for everyone but lovely in its own right. 90p Read More

65% new 85% French Average of 70 years old vines, unspecified mixed blacks ... gentle soft fruit and a very flora base note of, blue flowers to rise from the glass. The super fine tannins and great integration here immediately become obvious as this shows of its silky, smooth and polished texture in the mouth with just the faintest chewy q... Read More

  • Vajra Dolcetto d'Alba 2011

    Snoothrank:

All SS, different vineyards from Novello, Sinio, Barolo, Vergne, ... slightly edgy, very pure floral, wild sage and juniper accented red berry fruit. Some mild tannins offer a bit of support but dont get in the way of enjoying this flora,l fresh and fruity Dolcetto. 88pt Read More
