Common synonyms: Carinena, Carignano, Mazuelo

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Aragon, Spain
History of the grape: The grape has been traced as far back as the 3rd century in the Aragon province in Spain. The Aragon region of Carinena was originally named for the once-prolific regional grape, though Garnacha (or Grenache) has since gained precedence. As Mazuelo, it is one of the main blending grapes of Rioja and as Carinena in Priorat blends. From Spain it made its way to Algeria and was introduced into the Languedoc region of France some time in the 12th century. It's also mainly a blending grape there, most often with Cinsault, Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the 20th century, it found its way to places like Chile, the US and Israel, where growing conditions allow for more single varietal releases with concentrated flavors.
Characteristics of the grape: deep, dark, rich, strong tannins, mineral, blueberry, blackberry, boysenberry Read more »

  • After much agony and discernment, I have chosen the official wine for my Super Bowl party this year. Lots of up-front fruit in this oneRed Cherry, Red Plum, maybe, a touch of Raspberry. There is some sweetness and that might be due to fruit, but Im more inclined to think alcohol. A bit of earthiness, mid-palate. Noticeable pepper mid- to back-palate, but, again, that might be heat from alcohol. Read More
