Columbia County is within the Hudson River Valley in New York. While the Hudson River Valley is a historic wine-producing region, Columbia County is fairly new on the scene. Hudson-Chatham Winery is its first commercial vineyard, open since 2007. Since then, a handful of others are starting to crop up. The cool climate is well suited for North American/French hybrids such as Seyval Blanc and Baco Noir, as well as Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir. Wineries also offer fruit wines such as plum wine, liqueurs such as Cassis, and ciders.

  • Gramercy Cellars l'Idiot du Village Columbia Valley 2010

    Snoothrank:

80% Syrah, 12% Mourvedre, 4% Grenache, 4% CinsaultWith the 2011 vintage this is becoming a blend based on at least 75% MourvedreFunky and savory on the nose this is filled with umami driven aromas of dried beef, a little fish sauce, and Parmesan. Air brings out lots of cracked black peppery-ness along with dark fruit, violets, and salty, mineral... Read More

  • Seven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley Seven Hills Vineyard Reserve 2010

    Snoothrank:

From vines at fire Ridge and the old blocks of Seven Hills Vineyard. Just the 9th time this has been produced since 19888Slightly candied dark fruit greets the nose followed by cherries in alcohol, hints of cocoa, mineral, and sandy, and strong herbal and graphite accents. On the palate theres an early blast of hard oak, all vanilla and chocola... Read More

  • Seven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley Seven Hills Vineyard 2011

    Snoothrank:

Off the bat this shows lovely nuance with blue flowers, fine wild berry fruit, hints of juniper, black cherry, game, root beer and black pepper, with just a nuance of tobacco. Lovely and bright in the mouth, this shows gorgeous balance with tannins that show the slightest youthful edge but remain covered by masses of blue edged plummy fruit, bl... Read More

  • Seven Hills Winery Riesling Columbia Valley 2011

    Snoothrank:

A bit candied on the nose and just a touch funky, reduced though with air this begins to reveal layers of earthy, minty, camphor and chalky aromas. A bit sweet on entry, though with plenty of zesty acids adding zip to the slightly exotic flavors of a little strawberry fruit, then a hint of mango. More interesting than your typical citrus bomb,... Read More

  • Seven Hills Winery Merlot Walla Walla Valley Seven Hills Vineyard 2009

    Snoothrank:

Deep and earthy on the nose with rich carob, bitter cocoa and coriander notes framed in nougatty wood tones. The fruit is subtle, showing up with slightly herbal and dried black berry aromas. bright on entry, surprisingly so after the nose. This is vibrant and pure in the mouth with an odd early note of boiled peanuts that is followed by impress... Read More

  • Cougar Crest Syrah Walla Walla Valley 2007

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a beautiful ruby color in the glass with great clarity. The nose is full of rich dark fruit, blackberries, plum and cherry over some rich leather and oak. The taste is a classic Walla Walla Syrah, with rich fruit up front, blackberry, ripe plum that transitions to some cherry cola, dark chocolate and mineral notes mid palate. The lon... Read More
