The climate of this appellation is unique, partly because its elevation frees it from the fog which blankets the valley below in the afternoon. Also, since it faces west, the region benefits from extended, direct afternoon sunlight. The soils are volcanic and porous, contributing greatly to radiant cooling. The temperature can drop as much as 30°F in the afternoon, allowing grapes to maintain good acidity. Zinfandel is emerging as the best varietal for the appellation’s growing conditions. However, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese are also planted here. Located on the western slope of the Vaca Mountains, northeast of the city of Napa, this AVA has over 1,500 acres of vines in a region of 11,000 acres. Grapes have been grown within the region for well over 100 years. – Description from Appellation America (view original content)

Atlas Peak on Snooth

  • Turley Zinfandel Paso Robles 2006

    Snoothrank:

93 pointsThe nose on this wine is deep and spicy, with an intense herbal tone. Its very pastoral and full of tobacco and cherry notes. Black stone, chocolate, and gun smoke open up on the spin.Beginning with dried fruit and peppered, grilled meat, this wine quickly moves into a dense and spicy combination of dark fruit and firm minerals. This is... Read More

  • Cobblestone Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2004

    Snoothrank:

Wow, this is a massive wine! And yet it did not feel overbearing. Big aromas of toasty oak, blackberries, and currants. After giving it time to open up in the glass, you're greeted with a rich dark fruit medley of crushed black cherries and currants. Tannins are definitely there but very ripe and soft. Long finish. Went great with a rib-eye ... Read More

  • Cornerstone Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Atlas Peak Stepping Stone 2008

    Snoothrank:

Tried this at their Yountville Tasting Room. Overall, thought it was average. Woody and spicey, but with no overall distinctiveness that made me want more. It was served after a very powerful Syrah, which I think took something off this tasting. Read More

  • Cornerstone Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Atlas Peak Stepping Stone 2008

    Snoothrank:

The nose is marked by noticeable toasty oak that adds hints of coffee, bittersweet chocolate and allspice to the core of lightly herbal black currant fruit accented by notes of eucalyptus and dried tarragon. In the mouth this is nicely focused with good tension provided by the solid underlying acidity and brisk tannins. It offers nicely layered... Read More
