The climate of this appellation is unique, partly because its elevation frees it from the fog which blankets the valley below in the afternoon. Also, since it faces west, the region benefits from extended, direct afternoon sunlight. The soils are volcanic and porous, contributing greatly to radiant cooling. The temperature can drop as much as 30°F in the afternoon, allowing grapes to maintain good acidity. Zinfandel is emerging as the best varietal for the appellation’s growing conditions. However, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese are also planted here. Located on the western slope of the Vaca Mountains, northeast of the city of Napa, this AVA has over 1,500 acres of vines in a region of 11,000 acres. Grapes have been grown within the region for well over 100 years. – Description from Appellation America (view original content)

  • Cobblestone Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Atlas Peak 2005

    Snoothrank:

Bigger, bolder, chewier, beefier, than the '04, this wine has immense structure and concentration while retaining, for the most part, a nice balance. Even after extended bottle aging (their reserve is always held for 6 years before release) it still has a bit of a ways to go. After a double decant the tannins were still immediate but were fine... • Atlas Peak Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

    Snoothrank:

Tonight I cracked open a bottle of 2006 Atlas Peak Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, perhaps a rebellious response to so many young cabs (e.g. less than 4 years old) I've been drinking lately. The wine is a beautiful deep ruby color, and somewhat opaque. The nose is somewhat earthy, with hints of leather and tobacco, and something else I can't q... Read More

  • Cameron Hughes Lot234 Meritage Atlas Peak 2009

    Snoothrank:

Didnt get to taste in a proper glass but maybe next time. So here goes... smells of blackberries and combination of other dark berries with hint of smoke. Fruity of plums, blackberries, blueberry, oaky and the dryness lingers. Pretty decent although I am not sure about the balance ( a little acidic? and bitter tannins? I might be off). Read More

  • Ardente Atlas Peak Sangiovese 2002

    Snoothrank:

One of the most intriguing, complex wines I've had. Flavors of black cherry, oak & green olive dominate. A little tart in the beginning, but opened up nicely. Paired very well with the Cioppino we had for lunch. Read More
