Galicia Wine

Located on the northwest corner of Spain, Galicia is just under Portugal, along the Atlantic Ocean. It shares a wet, humid climate with a chilly wind, similar to Ireland or Scotland, with corresponding green pastures.

The most famous D.O. in the area is Rías Baixas, renown for white wines made from the Albariño grape. These wines are versatile pairing partners with many cuisines (especially seafood) and are refreshing and light, with citrus and tropical flavors and good acidity.
This is also home to Ribeira Sacra more inland, which primarily produces wines from the Mencia grape. These tend to be lighter in style than Bierzos and can be served to great effect with a slight chill. Other grapes grown in the area are Godello, Treixadura and Albariño.
Even farther inland, with a much drier climate is D.O. Monterrei. This area is mostly known for dry whites made with Doña Blanca, Treixadura and Godello. Some reds are also produced from Read more »

  • Licia Albariño Rías Baixas Licia 2011

This shows an almost herbal note early on nose followed by peach and dried lemon pith aromas.Quite smooth and polished in the mouth, though with no shortage of brightening acidity, this shows rather intense lemon, quince and almost tropical fruit flavors. The finish reverts to lighter apple notes but superimposed on lovely suggestions of green t... Read More

  • Bodega Castro Martin Family Estate Selection Albarino 'Sobre Lias' 2011

This has a lovely nose, all swathed in a gentle florality with soft apricot, plum, and tangerine aromas that show a little candied almond note. This is focused and fairly precise in the mouth with big acids lending a classic seashell note on the palate, and even a whisper of tannins supporting slightly herb toned green plum, lime and melon fruit... • Licia Albariño Rías Baixas Licia 2011

Mary said it was the best white of the year (June 2013). Of course it should be noted, her total to date summer white wine samplings now number two. She consumed this with her friend, Joyce, while I was in Texas visiting our 23 month old granddaughter. I have placed an order for another half case, so I might too enjoy this Albarino. Those additi... Read More

  • Terras Gauda O Rosal 2011

Terras Gauda is a good wine but one which does not quite justify its price. You can talk to many Gallegos who will tell you that once this bodega got pretty big the quality of the wine started to suffer. It's still a good wine but one that is more at home in the 13-15 dollar range. Read More

  • Bodegas Terras de Lantano Albarino Vina Cartin Rias Baixas NV

Do yourself a favor and try this under appreciated Albarinho wine from Galicia. It is one of the best Galician whites at this price level. Has had a higher rating than Terras Gaudas at half the price. Read More
