Médoc Wine

Geographically the Medoc is the entire peninsular north of the City of Bordeaux but the appellation of that name for red wines created in 1936 only refers to the 16 communes at the northern end. The area is sometimes called the Bas-Medoc or Lower-Medoc [though not on wine labels] There are no classed growths here although there are a number of Cru Bourgeois estates.

It did not always carry such prestige. Until the Dutch drained it in the mid-17th century, the Medoc was only a salt marsh.Wine making really got going at the begining of the 18th century. The wines tend to be made mostly from Cabernet Sauvignon.

  • Chateau Saint Ahon Haut-Medoc 2010

    Snoothrank:

Rebuilt during the Napoleonic order, this property (Haut-Medoc) is a bit of a surprise; (try finding the name of this saint in any listing, par example), there are gobs of blackberry, cherry and a hint of vanilla on the palate, and the nose is of cherry-dipped cigar. Much better than expected, with a soft, metallic finish. 90. Read More

  • Chateau Grand Bouchon "Revelations" Medoc 2012

    Snoothrank:

A merlot left banker (60% - 40$ Cab) this is a strong merlot, but it does have holes in it, thusly it's not quite complete. Plenty of dark cherry, plum, old leather and oak coupled with chewy tannins and bracing acidity it shouts (loudly) RED MEAT! 88 points - hold 18-24 mths - Paul Read More
