Victoria Wine

Victoria is a wine growing state in the South East part of Australia. Because of its diverse terroirs and micro-climates, many different styles of wine can be attributed to its regions, from sparkling to dry reds and whites to dessert wines known as “stickies.” The state capital Melbourne is the epicenter, with bustling restaurants and wine bars dedicated to local bottlings.

This state was among the first to be planted with vinifera vines in the mid 19th century, particularly around the cool-climate Yarra Valley. However, it was not as lucky as other parts of the country to escape the deadly Phylloxera louse outbreak some thirty years later, and the industry suffered until the hybrid grafting solution was discovered in the early 20th century.

Victoria has six regions which in turn have many subregions:

Victoria on Snooth

  • Hey thanks NG.  I'm going to search that out.  Victoria is a haven for environmentalists and I'd be surprised if I couldn't find a copy of that.  EDUCATION would be extremely effective and the best place for all levels of government in California to start the conservation effort.  I'm willing to bet though, that changing so many mentalities will... • Simmer down Brian.  Do me a favour and give Sam your list, better yet, ... decent California stuff in Victoria, but none of the small vineyards around you Brian and as I said, that goes for Seattle.  Shipping is an option, but I'm talking about going into a shop and finding that stuff you promote actually there.&nbs Read More

  • Welcome Sam,I'm in Victoria BC (Canada).  The stuff that the California people are so fond of isn't available most places elsewhere.  We aren't talking about big wineries.  It's also pretty pricey. The people you typically cater to will be looking for good and not expensive.  I wouldn't be telling you anything you don't already know if I say look... • Charlotte Victoria - you make some assumptions that may not be true in any way. You seem to use "wine tourism" and "visiting a vineyard" to mean the same thing but they don't.Visiting a vineyard may or may not be part of "wine tourism" but most people who are tourists have no interest at all in visiting vineyards. If they do, they will look at r... Read More

  • OT, Victoria is about 28' west of Forestville longitudinally.  :)  I try not to post photos and gloat like Victorians love to do as the rest of the country (except Vancouver) is not enjoying our Spring.  We're still behind you in mean temperature.  I think the actual air temperature is about 62, but with the sun on you (not a cloud here either) ...
