Mount Kinabalu Facts

Mount Kinabalu, located in the Malaysian state of Sabah, is the highest mountain in the country. It’s also one of the most sacred places for the indigenous peoples of Sabah.

The mountain has a long history of human activity. The earliest evidence of human occupation dates back to 3,000 BCE. The mountain was formerly known as Mount Wilhelm or Mount Singing Bee (Yalang Kala or Yalang Kuwai), which is how it was called in the local language.

Mount Kinabalu has two main climbing routes: one from Bario to Mount Tambuyong and another from Tanjung Puting to Mount Tambuyong. Both routes are around 30 kilometers long and take about three to four days to complete. There are several campsites along the way, which can be used for rest and recovery between climbs.

The Mount Kinabalu earthquake of 2015 was a devastating event in the history of Borneo, a tropical island located between the Philippines and Indonesia. The earthquake had a maximum Mercalli intensity of V (Violent). It was felt as far away as in Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The earthquake struck on June 5th at 7:15 am local time, triggering an avalanche that killed at least 16 people and injured many more. More than 100 structures were destroyed, including several hotels and resorts that were operating at the time of the quake.

The most significant damage occurred to basements where the ground had shifted and fallen away from the foundations, causing them to collapse. The earthquake also caused cracks in city roads and sidewalks that required immediate repairs before they could be used again by residents and tourists alike.
