Turley is a winery that focuses on small production “Big Red” wines from old vine Zinfandel and Petite Syrah, based in St. Helena in the Napa Valley, California. The winery is a family operation helmed brother and sister duo Larry and Helen Turley, founded in 1993. Their prestigious wines are in constantly high demand, and their private wine club has a two-year waiting list. The wines are produced from several vineyards, with vines dating back to the 1800s. Each terroir lends its own character to the wines, and they are given separate labels according to location each vintage. The vineyards are located in Napa, Sonoma, Paso Robles, Lodi, Howell Mountain and Contra Costa.

Turley on SnoothSeptember 2012
Floral baking spice and red berry nose. It's a lighter, more delicate, feminine wine with pretty notes over power. Flavors of red raspberry and strawberry over gentle spice influence. Like a luscious Pinot Noir version of Zinfandel.96 pts.9/1/12 at winery Read More

Complex nose of pepper, flowers and red fruits. Mouthwatering fresh fruit flavors of raspberry, mineral and spice with firm tannins. Good balance. Really nice wine which they said is peaking presently. From 80 yr old vines.92 pts.9/1/12 at winery Read More

Mineral heavy nose of fresh strawberry. It's tasty and refreshing with just the right amount of sweet. As these wines go, this one has structure and isn't the usual "Capri Sun for Soccer Moms".87 pts.9/1/12 at winery Read More

Well, I am headed back up to Amador County (plymouth, ca) for wine tasting after several years. It is not my first choice in wine regions, but a friend wants to visit. I see, that in my absence, that several new wineries have popped up there.... and it is not still all Zin and Viogner. I was doing some research, and it appears there are mor... Read More

In my daily travels I pass through the Napa Valley every Monday. A few weeks ... time was the winemaker for Turley. One thing lead to another and Mike ended up interning for Thomas for 3 harvests helping with Outpost, Rivers Marie, Schrader and Maybach among others. After that he was hooked and moved his family from Portland to St Helena. In 20... Read More

I am a dyed in the wool fan of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlots, Sangiovese's and a few Chardonnays and Pinot Grigio's. I am trying to widen my spectrum to include Pinot Noir's. I live in the Pacific Northwest so the Pinot Noir's are readily available due to the large varieties from Oregon. Before I embark on purchasing some different brands I would l... Read More

The nose was intense yet elegant, showing blackberry and raspberry fruits, sweet spices, hints of charred wood and a whiff of vanilla. On the palate, I found intense, concentrated fruit kept in check by a core of streamlined acidity. Red and black fruits seemed to saturate the entire palate with hints of herbs, pepper and pure cocoa. On its own,... Read More

I recently found a relatively new grass roots wine shop/loft in LA named the Redd Collection, founded by two friends who met while working at Wally's in the 90's. They're doing themed tastings once a week on Friday/Saturday, and this weekend featured a tasting of Ridge Zinfandel's from 1973, 91, 92, 94, and 95. How could I pass this up? Luckily,... Read More

I have a coffee shop buddy with whom I mostly talk about auto racing (he used to drive Formula Fords and Sports 2000s) who asked me an interesting question the other day that I am going to pass along. Does wine production, mostly, I suspect, the fermentaiton process, create carbon dioxide? It seems to me that it does, but is it significant? I h... Read More
