Since our small winery’s first vintage in 1991, our goal has been to create handcrafted, full-flavored wines that express the personality of the unique Sonoma County vineyards where they are grown. Fred first became known for Zinfandel from his father’s Alexander Valley vineyard, and now his careful hand with Pinot Noir from the Russian River and Sonoma County has quietly gained attention and a steady following. That same attention has made Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah that exemplify the bounty of Sonoma County vineyards. – Description from Dragac

Scherrer Winery on Snooth

  • We're heading back to (my favorite wine region) Russian River the first weekend in October and are looking for advice on what to do and what to expect.  We've been to RRV several times but only during the off season.  Is there anything special we should do at this time of year, and conversely, is there anything we should avoid? • Scherrer Winery Zinfandel Alexander Valley Old and Mature Vines Scherrer Vineyard 2010

    Snoothrank:

Awesome zin from Russian River. Loads of bright red and blue fruit well balanced with good acidity and silky tannin. As good as it is now it will get better with some age that will take away the slight heat on the nose. Read More

  •  Wow, we had a great time last night. Hopefully Foxall will have a chance to put his spin on things. I didn't take any notes, just 2 pictures but I lined up some of the dead soldiers this morning. 15 people, over 30 different wines and not a single dud except for a sweet/syrupy/candied 2001 Rosenblum Monte Rosso Zinfandel. But enough for the bad... Read More

  • Pinot has been a much celebrated topic here on Snooth over the years I've participated, and it's obviously one of the more celebrated grapes in the wine world. It'll no doubt be a story line I plan on focusing on in years to come so I thought I'd start a thread, logging experiences. Sorry in advance, Greg T.Having said that, I've been mostly dis... • Scherrer Winery Zinfandel Alexander Valley Old and Mature Vines Scherrer Vineyard 2009

    Snoothrank:

Clean and crisp, with bright red cherry, cranberry, great balance and good acidity. Not the big jammy kind of zin but refined and restrained like most of Fred's wines - excellent. Read More

  • Scherrer Winery Zinfandel Alexander Valley Old and Mature Vines Scherrer Vineyard 2011

    Snoothrank:

Just got my zin futures from Fred and couldn't resist tasting both the Shale Terrace and the Old and Mature vines. Old and Mature vines is a more bolder wine than the shale with more body, dark berry fruit, some jam but with good acidity. Great overall balance. Where the Shale is more Pinot like, the OMV has more of a syrah-ness to it. Read More

  • Scherrer Winery Zinfandel Alexander Valley Scherrer Shale Terrace 2011

    Snoothrank:

Fred's done it again. This excellent zin is full of ripe dark fruit. I get some rhubarb and dark cherry, great acidity, a little smoke and overall fantastic balance. This is very fresh and young so I'm going to do my best to hold on to the rest of these bottles for a while, though that may be easier said than done. Read More
