High in the Mayacamas Range, at an elevation of 1,700 feet above the Napa Valley floor, are Spring Mountain and the Robert Keenan Winery and vineyards. This area was first identified as prime vineyard land by Peter Conradi in the late 19th century when he planted 100 acres of terraced vineyard in Zinfandel and Syrah grapes. The Conradi Winery operated until Prohibition when the vineyards and winery fell out of use. In 1974, Robert Keenan purchased 180 acres of forest on the defunct Conradi Winery site. No vines remained. Only the crumbling walls of the former winery and a few old broken tanks told of its history, but Robert was certain the mountain top vineyards would be perfect for an estate winery. He replaced tree stumps and rocks with rows of Cabernet and Chardonnay, hired an engineer to redesign the original winery structure, and brought in a contractor to begin construction. The winery was made operational just in time for the harvest of 1977. From that time on, Keenan has earned a great reputation Read more »

Robert Keenan Winery on Snooth

  • Keenan Zinfandel Napa Valley 2008

    Snoothrank:

Deep dark color. Moderate aromatics--somewhat plummy, berryish. Fairly mellow on the tip of the tongue. Flavors include blackberry and mint. Fairly light on the tannin. This is not a big Zin, but it is very drinkable. I will certainly enjoy it with my meal, tonight, but this is a red wine that can be sipped, excuse me, gulped, by itself. U... Read More

  • Robert Keenan Winery Merlot Napa Valley 2008

    Snoothrank:

Slight volatile acid on the nose. Not much fruit hints. Something of a fungus hint. Fruit emerges on the tip of the tongue--and a strange "sweetness" (not like sugar and not from alcohol) around the mid-tongue. Some tannin, but not anything big. Pretty easy to drink, today, but I really don't think this is a layer-downer. I'm a little supr... Read More

  • Robert Keenan Winery Merlot Napa Valley 2008

    Snoothrank:

Deep plum color. Woody, minty nose. Nice mouth feel. Some tannic astringency. Woody flavors. Balance and structure that I like. Definitely not fruity, and that might put some people off. Far from Keenan Carneros Merlot offerings that I've tried in the past. This is more like their robust Spring Mountain fruit that I really like. Read More

  • Robert Keenan Napa Valley Reserve Merlot Merlot Napa Valley Spring Mountain District 2003

    Snoothrank:

Full disclosure, I am not a merlot guy. This is not your father's merlot. This is a big FULL BODIED wine as complex as any Napa Valley high dollar cab. Dark red in the glass with very little light coming through. Hint of mint in the bouquet. On the palate fills the mouth with multiple levels of flavors. Quite a bit of tannin indicates that... • Robert Keenan Winery Zinfandel Napa Valley 2007

    Snoothrank:

Nice red/purple color. Woody, nutty "bouquet." Big mouth-filling flavor--blackberries. Significance tannins indicating aging potention (rats this is the only bottle I have). Very good big zin. Winery notes rcommended it be served with grilled meats. I agree. I enjoyed it with grilled porterhouse steak, grilled Mexican onions, grilled marin... Read More

  • This past Wednesday we were lucky to have hosted a fine tasting of Juslyn’s Estate Cabernet Sauvignon with Managing Partner and General Manager Stephanie DeMasi. With such a small business, production is hovering around 1300 cases total and the estate vineyard is a mere eight acres, it’s easy for a GM to know the ins and outs of the operation, a... Read More

  • Robert Keenan Winery Merlot Mailbox Vineyard Spring Mountain District 2006

    Snoothrank:

Deep, rich aromas of sweet rhubarb, honeydew melon, dark cherry, raspberry, blackberry, banana custard and Irish crème, with hints of liverwurst, vanilla, cinnamon, cream cheese, and grass. This is a big and integrated wine on the palate with strong fruits and complex medleys of tastes that walk through the whole mouth with bold steps. Includ... Read More
