Sauvignon Blanc

(aka. Blanc Fume, Fume Blanc, Savagnin Musque)

Sauvignon Blanc is widely grown in California -- at over 15,000 acres, it’s now the third most planted variety -- and often assumes the moniker ‘Fume Blanc’. This popular synonym, credited to Napa’s Robert Mondavi, derives from the grape’s historic home of Pouilly in France’s Upper Loire Valley, where Sauvignon Blanc is the dominant varietal and goes locally by the name of ‘Blanc Fumé’. This noble grape is also successfully grown in Washington State and in New York on Long Island. In Canada, the variety is establishing a foothold in both the Niagara region of Ontario and British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley.

When treated with respect and afforded suitable growing conditions, it is one of the wine world’s darlings. Dry wines made from this grape are characterized by steely, racy acidity, green, gooseberry fruit, asparagus and a grassy, herbaceous character. It is rarely oaked, except in California, where it has often been subjected to Read more »

  • Lincourt Sauvignon Blanc 2011

    Snoothrank:

Lovely wine - delicate floral aromatics are forward as a first impression, with nectarine, tarragon, pink grapefruit and its pith coming in later. The taste follows suit, with a mouth filling viscosity that I'd usually expect from a Chardonnay, suggesting that perhaps there's a tiny bit of residual sugar. But, the wine is far from sweet, and the... Read More

  • Clarendelle Bordeaux Blanc 2015

    Snoothrank:

So those of modest means (most of us, I think) may find the two Clarendelle wines (in this case, the white) a little dear, although the quality is high for A. C. Bordeaux. The white seems the best in terms of crowd-pleasing power: this young wine has a bouquet of mown lawn, gooseberry, and cake spice. Very inviting. Entry is slightly youthful ... Read More

    Snoothrank:

Nose is almost acridseems really acidic. Some tart grapefruit on entry, then, some tropical fruitbananaor melon. Some grassiness. Yes, there is quite tart acid. That, of course, makes for a refreshing wine. Certainly, easy to drink, but, equally certain, not a particularly sophisticated wine. Read More

  • I’m always being asked to recommend an unusual wine, “one that isn’t Cabernet Sauvignon or Chardonnay”. With media communications improving by the minute it’s getting more and more difficult but at a recent corporate event I saw a few puzzled expressions when I suggested Blaufränkisch. It’s one of my favourite Austrian reds and certainly falls i... Read More
