Name of varietal: Prosecco

Common synonyms: Glera
Parentage of the grape: thought to have been first grown in Friuli, then brought to the Veneto region of Italy where it became most popular.
History of the grape: References to a lightly sparkling wine in the Veneto date back to the 1100s, but it was much sweeter than the popular styles today. The reason for this is that the grape reaches full ripeness relatively late in the harvest season. The grapes would be crushed and set to ferment. However cold temperatures that couldn’t be controlled meant the wine would be bottled often before complete fermentation, which means residual sugar that didn’t get a chance to be converted to alcohol is still in the wine. Come spring, carbon dioxide gets trapped in the bottle, and the wine gets fizzy. The Carpene Malvoti winery under the direction of Antonio Carpene is credited with changing that method in 1868. He employed the French Charmat method to give the wine a secondary Read more »

  • I took my then-girlfriend, now-wife to Florence by way of Tuscany for our first ... ... the grape used to make Prosecco, is blended with Pinot Noir to create this accessible rosé sparkler.  Try it out on someone who likes Prosecco as a rule and they will be pleasantly surprised. Rose petal and sweet ripe cherry aromas and a strawberry preserve... Read More

  • Sommariva Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore NV

Yes, I do like Prosecco; its friendly, approachable kind of conviviality (with a touch of edginess) reminds me of Italian landsmen. This Prosecco, however, coming as it does from the Valdobbiadene Classico region and full of dry citric flavour on the palate and lemon oil (yes, the cleaner) on the nose with plenty of effervescence - is very fine ... Entry level prosecco, though nice for the price point, it shows. A little honeysuckle, apple and plenty of tiny bubbles it suffices. Drink now - 83 points - Paul. Read More

A recent Naked Wines selection. A delightful little number. Opens with sparkly yeast lemon lime and stays there. Very bright, nice acidity, and loads and loads of bubbles. Had this alone and then as part of a French 75 and as part of a Mexican 75 with a bit of St. Germain - terrific every which way. Angel Price point of $15 - outstanding. Read More
