Parentage of the grape: it’s a chicken or egg scenario. Cab Franc has been determined as one of the parents of Cabernet Sauvignon (the other is Sauvignon Blanc).

History of the grape: References to it in the Loire region of France date as far back as the mid 12th century. But its historic moment came In the 17th century when Cardinal Richelieu selected it for the garden of Abbaye de St. Nicolas de Bourgeuil, where it was attended by an abbot named Breton (hence the local synonym). Plantings spread into Bordeaux in the 18th century, where it met its life partner Sauvignon Blanc, and Cabernet Sauvignon came into existence. It is now mostly used as a blending grape there. However in the Loire and Southwest France, it is still vinified as a varietal wine in the likes of Bourgeuil, Chinon, Tauraine, Saumur, Anjou and the few reds of Read more »

Cabernet Franc on Snooth

  • Le Grand Bougueteau Chinon Cabernet Franc Loire Valley Chinon 2012

    Snoothrank:

Old world in style even though it seems to be a ripe vintage. Ripe fruit and a touch of menthol on the nose. Red fruited in the mouth with some sharp acidity and a bit of biting tannin on the finish. I know, baby killer. Read More

  • The second day (Thursday) was to be full of fun and excitement.  We did ... here, the Chardonnay and the Cabernet Franc.  The Cabernet Sauvignon was nothing to write home about.Oh, breakfast at our Bed & Breakfast Inn was very tasty and a good way to start off the day.  The place is near a corner with lots of road noise though.  I was awoken a... • Sandra and I needed to head down south to Charlottesville, Virginia this week to attend a Louis Black comic performance at the Paramont Theater.  Louis wasn't playing closer to us in Washington DC like he usually does, so we figured why not go down there and make it a Bed & Breakfast trip with some wine tasting tossed in.  And thus it was to be.... • Chateau Cantemerle Haut-Médoc 2006

    Snoothrank:

This 2006 is a very fine wine, but has been marred by too much oak; an earlier tasting showed that at least 10 years was required to tame this excess. Today ( Feb 2017) the wine is far more refined, the dry, cedar bark and blackberry nose and entry is smoother, but still quite tannic; there is a lot of oak. A tasty wine without doubt, but prod... • St. Supery Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

    Snoothrank:

Nice unsweetened dark fruit on entry. Lots of earthiness. Lots of oaky factors. Stiff tannins suggested that patient aging will be beneficial. Read More

  • Esteemed wine critics like Robert Parker and Antonio Galloni employ ... choice ... ... choice but I prefer, Cabernet Franc, Cab Sauv’s other cohort. I find Leah Jorgensen Cellars expresses the many feminine faces of this lovely grape. Sometimes it is the elegant lady in a flowing red gown.  Her perfume of violets, spice, and juicy ripe fruit ... • Chateau Fontbernard Saint-Emilion 2010

    Snoothrank:

Really, really good. In fact this could stand a couple of more years in the cellar. Black berry fruit, mocha, vanilla, chewy tannins that turn into a sweetish daek cherry on the finish and vibrant acidity make this a classic effort. Drink or hold - 90 points - Paul Read More

  • OK, my OCD is kicking in.Al, did the Somm say that it contained ... - Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot and the rarer St. Macaire, Gros Verdot and Carmenère. If the blend includes any other grape variety, it is, by definition, not a Meritage. Also, to qualify as a Meritage, no single grape variety can make up more... Read More
