Bual

Bual (or Boal) is a grape variety used in Madeira production. It is the second sweetest of the four noble Madeira grapes: Sercial, Verdelho, Bual and Malmsey. It makes medium-rich fortified wines. – Description from Rodolphe Boulanger

A very nice finish. Just celebrated our 33 wedding anniversary with a glass. (1976 was a good year to be married.) Read More

  • Rare Madeira New York Malmsey

    Snoothrank:

If you love Madeira and live in New York, don't buy this wine in state! I was ... song. Its sister, the Boston Bual, had a $10 homer price premium.Anyway, I've sung the praises of the Rare Wine Company's Historic Series elsewhere, but their New York Malmsey, the sweetest style of Madeira, is truly spectacular. A medium brown colored wine with... Read More

  • I have a thing for Madeira. I've never bought a bottle, but I have been lucky enough to taste some pretty cool stuff and each time I'm blown away by the complexity and enjoyment I get out of these wines. Greg was kind enough to dig up some treasures from his cellar to mark the occasion of me trekking over to frigid New York from my base of San F... Read More

  • Cossart Gordon Bual Vintage Madeira 2006

    Snoothrank:

A rather unusuaul nose with a profound quinine element to the floral and herbal tones. With air panchetta and chestnut tones emerge with a slight musty edge. Moderately sweet in the mouth with cocoa and roasted chestnut flavors on the mid-palate that yield to a sugary, green walnut tone on the narrow, short finish. Very front loaded 86pts Read More

  • Manuel de Sousa Herdeiros Madeira Boal

    Snoothrank:

Old leather and wood greet the nose and are joined by lovely notes of molasses, gingerbread, oreo cookie, licorice, and spicebox. In the mouth there is a lovely richness here playing off banana fosters and burnt marshmallow flavors. The texture is downright voluptuous with a lingering vanilla tone on the sticky finish with a haunting tone of che... Read More

  • Cossart Gordon Bual Vintage Madeira 1920

    Snoothrank:

really deep on the nose with an uncommon combination of Mexican chocolate and broth concentrate. With air gains notes of dried papaya, anise seed and cardamom. Fairly dry and with searing acidity this possesses lots of dark, coffee liquor tones with a rich mid-palate and a long finish of roasted nuts, that turns a bit bitter and clumsy. 90pts Read More

  • Madeira Wine Association Boal

    Snoothrank:

Very restrained on the nose but layered with lovely dried herbal and floral notes. lemon blossoms, berry fruit, spearmint, bay, green walnut, superb complexity. In the mouth this is thick yet lively with a deep base of bitter roots, sassafrass, and spice, with fine length that really lingers turning green herbal and almost minty on the finale. W... • Welsh Brothers Boal

    Snoothrank:

Quite evolved and heavy on the nose with a very high toned aqnd acid driven fig fruit. Sweet and syrupy in the mouth with a disjointed feel. This is bright and hot with a cinnamon note that recalls candy red hots. Monotone and ponderous in the mouth. 84pts Read More
