Willamette Valley Wine

The Willlamette Valley region in Oregon has a wine-making history that dates back to the 1850s. Early immigrant settlers began dabbling in wine-making, and their enterprises eventually won some local acclaim and attracted other vintners to follow suit, with a fair amount of success into the 20th century.

However, the Prohibition forced most wineries to shut down and pursue other business. In the era following Repeal, wine production was mostly from “Farmer’s Wineries,” who were government-licensed to produce fruit-based (berries, Concord grapes, etc.) wines. Though others attempted wines from Vitis vinifera grapes, they did so with little success.

But in the 1960s, a group of California oenologists from University of California at Davis became interested in Oregon as a potential up and coming region. They were particularly intrigued by the Willamette Valley for its climate and terroir, even though temperature studies at UC Davis found the region Read more »

  • Antica Terra Chardonnay "Aurata" Oregon 2011

    Snoothrank:

Very complex mineraly, yeasty, and subtle wood aromas greet the nose. Bright and light on entry which shows an attractive nuance of candied almond followed by a very clear core of fruit on the palate driven by bright acidity. Perhaps a bit lean, this is quite mineral driven in the mouth with tart orchard fruit and citrus accents that take on we... Read More

  • Stoller Chardonnay Reserve Dundee Hills 2012

    Snoothrank:

Ripe on the nose with almost honey tinged apple fruit, polleny floral notes, plenty of wood but not excessively toasty or spicy. This is very ripe, round. and fairly rich in the mouth with lovely acidity contributing brightness. There's fine textural essence on the midpalate here, firm with fine cut, then great length with perhaps a bit of heat ... Read More

    Snoothrank:

40% in new FO for ten months Lovely nose shows leesy notes with a light but obvious oak note. Bright acids, gorgeous lively quality in the mouth, opens up on the midpalate with delicacy and freshness, then this turns a bit simple on the finish with green apple and some unripe peach notes, though there is nice acid drive on the moderately long f... Very figgy nose with wood spice, dried fruit, dried herbal notes, and deep slightly compote and mineral accented fruit wrapped in a fine gauze of oak and corn husk. • Brick House Cascadia Chardonnay Willamette Valley 2011

    Snoothrank:

almost no new wood Funky lees notes lend an earthy cast to the unusually violet tinged nose. Very bright and precise in the mouth with hints of peachy fruit and dusty chalkiness. • Brick House Cascadia Chardonnay Willamette Valley 2012

    Snoothrank:

Significantly more new wood A bit funky and decidedly mineral one the nose with white peppery and sweet oaks spice accenting the base of slightly white floral notes with tropical fruit peels. Elegant and broad in the mouth with some stuffing to it, but this is very soft on the plate considering the weight, though it turns clean, fresh, and preci... Read More
