for this region?

The Umpqua Valley is famous for its natural beauty and world renowned fishing. It is also an important viticultural region in Oregon. The Umpqua Valley not only separates the Willamette Valley AVA to the north and the Rogue Valley AVA to the south, but also represents the median of Oregon’s climate.

The region is cooler than the Rogue Valley and distinctly warmer than the Willamette Valley to the north. Bordered to the east by the Cascade Mountains and the west by the Coastal Mountain Range, the valley is cooled by Pacific breezes flowing along the Umpqua River. Vineyards are mostly found below 1,000 feet and are planted to Pinot Noir, with smaller amounts of Pinot Gris, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling and a scattering of French American hybrids. A vineyard’s proximity to the Coast Range can greatly affect its terroir, making generalizations about the region difficult. The region recently gained a sub-appellation, when the TTB granted AVA status to the Red Hills of Douglas County.

  • Spangler Vineyards Red Bordeaux Blend Southern Oregon Claret 2008

    Snoothrank:

A fully loaded, full bodied blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Carmenere. Blue-black berries, dark cherries and cigar on the nose flow effortlessly on to the palate to give way to flavors of dark fruit, chocolate and a pie spice finish that goes on and on. This is my kind of Claret, and it's delicious w... Read More

  • Delfino Vineyards Umpqua Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

    Snoothrank:

Aromas showcased black currants with a hint of vanilla and pie spice, along with robust, layered flavors of blackberries and dark cherries. I loved the lingering finish on this Cab, and I truly enjoyed every sip. Excellent with BBQ Ribs or Flank Steak Read More

  • Abacela Grenache Rose 2011

    Snoothrank:

This shows nice mineral, herb and cherry skin aromas on the nose, over a base of dry earth and dried grass. This is fairly rich in the mouth with good acidity and plenty of lightly brambly berry fruit. Theres a nice pop of strawberry on the palate with feathery tannins that drive the mineral, lemon pith and quartz-toned finish. Big and juicy, th... Read More

  • Domaine Trouvere Syrah 2008

    Snoothrank:

This is very herbal at first, a regular cupboard of dried herbs, softly sweet and aromatic with accents of cracked pepper, cocoa, black cherry, plum and date. Rich and soft in the mouth with lovely freshness to the flavors, all wild berry, wood spiced and a touch earthy/herbal, but this lacks focus. The acidity is rather soft and the tannins ab...
