Carneros Wine

Los Carneros- The first AVA one comes to as one splits off the Napa Vallejo Highway and takes route 29 towards the City of Napa from the south is Los Carneros. Reaching from close to the southern border of the county to the southwestern edge of the City, Carneros was the first AVA to be determined solely by climate. It has the unusual honor of spanning across the southern reaches of both Sonoma and Napa counties. The climate here is cool, think summer in San Francisco, and while the average rainfall is the lowest in Napa Valley it can be a humid region due the fog that rolls in off the bay. These conditions are ideal for the so-called cool climate grapes of Burgundy. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay rule the roost here yielding ripe yet balanced wines with fresh acidity and a round, friendly feel. Merlot is a distant third, though the cool, crisp quality of the fruit can produce attractively elegant examples and an excellent structural component for blending. Los Carneros is a source of successful sparking Read more »

  • Monica?  You keep finding them v v.My soft spot for Keenan is pretty well ... think the rest comes from Carneros.  Anyway this is one of the least tannic red wines from Keenan I have ever had.  Quite soft and round.  Some cherry fruit and some herbal hints.  Normally, I would not recommend a Keenan for a Merlot lover--typically, they are more ... • Ramey Hyde Vineyard Carneros-Napa Chardonnay 2009

Lots of fruit flavor on introduction to the palatemelon, pineapple, and, as the wine moves farther back, lemon. A very round and quite full-bodied wine. Tartness keeps it refreshing. Oak is most noticeably apparent in the vanilla aftertaste. I REALLY like this one. Read More

  • Sean Minor Carneros Pinot Noir 2011

This is a very subtle and fruity Pinot Noir with a flavor that lingers on the tongue for long after the wine has passed down the gullet. Anyone looking for something super-bold should go elsewhere but I'm not a big fan of tannins and I loved this wine. Earthy, fruity, flavorful, but not overpowering. I'd buy it again Read More

  • Thanks, everyone, for your feedback and advice.  I was too harsh in my ... Noir likeCambria and Acacia Carneros.  Zin's alcohol content is too high for me and Barbera/Sangiovese are generally too dry.  This year's Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau is terrible: cheap flavors, $9 pricetag and a heck of a hangover the next morning. &nbs Read More

Full and richly complex aromas of black cherry and chocolate, toast, oak and vanilla and a bit of tar. Flavors are smooth, with round tannins, cinnamon, baking spice and cedar box, leather, tobacco and beautiful black cherry. Read More
