Mendocino County Wine

Mendocino County AVA is a large and climatically diverse region within the North Coast region of California. Wine-making began here in the 1850s when failed gold prospectors planted vineyards. Italian immigrants arrived soon after and expanded plantings into the hillsides. Despite the expansion of the wine industry at this time, Mendocino County wines remained fairly obscure and isolated, though more and more vineyards were being planted for local consumption. But this isolation worked in the region’s favor, as many of the vines were spared from the Phylloxera epidemic and the rest could be salvaged by regrafting as hybrid European-American rootstock, which was immune to the dreaded louse.

However, like most of the California wine industry, Mendocino County suffered near collapse during the Prohibition from 1921 - 1933. The region did not recover until the 1960s when the Parducci and Fetzer family estates rose to prominence. Other wineries followed their example. Today Read more »

  • Anaba Alder Springs Vyd Mendocino 2010

    Snoothrank:

Great Surprise, even more so because I cannot remember how I received this Wine. Lovely, well rounded and big and silky in the mouth. Great blend of stone fruit, a hint of smoke, some oak, then - a swelling sweet cream with just a bit of vanilla taste...lingering on and on. Had this alone, but suspect it would pair perfectly with any number of ... Read More

  • Idlewild Grenache Gris Gibson Ranch Mcdowell Valley 2013

    Snoothrank:

Fermented on skins and stems, carbonic start for a lifted character, then foot tread 10 days before pressing, finish in SS, four months in neutral wood Lots of red fruit emerges on the nose which shows a floral, rather high toned character and sweet orchard and citrus fruit aromas. There gorgeous texture to this on the palate, rich, almost chewy... Read More

  • Edmeades Winery Zinfandel Mendocino County Shamrock Vineyard 2010

    Snoothrank:

Fantastic Mendocino zin! A touch of vanilla on the nose, dark chocolate covered black cherries on the palate with just a hint of salinity and acidity to make your mouth water. This is full of dark fruits but not jammy or over drawn. Although this big red comes in at 16% abv, it's not hot, but well balanced and definitely a keeper. Read More

  • Belle Glos Pinot Noir Rose Oeil de Perdrix Mendocino County Yorkville Highlands Caymus 2012

    Snoothrank:

Decent rose of pinot noir. Subtle red cherry, a bit of acidity although a bit lighter than I care for. Nice deck wine but for the price I expect a bit more flavor even for a rose. Read More

  • Rhys Pinot Noir Anderson Valley Bearwallow Vineyard 2011

    Snoothrank:

Not a terribly dark color, which is what I would expect from a PN. Some fruity and some earthy or grassy aromas. Very easy introduction on the tongue. I then get the cherry that I always get with PN, but I have to say this is not as "in your face" as most examples. The thing I think I like about this one over most PNs is that it does have a ... My 1/8, the groups 5/8 Jammy and fruity on the nose with attractive gingerbread oak tones working well with violet, cocoa, and chocolate-laced wild berry fruit aromas. Bright, clean and fresh in the mouth with gorgeous berry fruit and a suggestion of watermelon freshness that shows fine purity and expresses the violets and chocolate found on th... Read More
