Mendocino County Wine

Mendocino County AVA is a large and climatically diverse region within the North Coast region of California. Wine-making began here in the 1850s when failed gold prospectors planted vineyards. Italian immigrants arrived soon after and expanded plantings into the hillsides. Despite the expansion of the wine industry at this time, Mendocino County wines remained fairly obscure and isolated, though more and more vineyards were being planted for local consumption. But this isolation worked in the region’s favor, as many of the vines were spared from the Phylloxera epidemic and the rest could be salvaged by regrafting as hybrid European-American rootstock, which was immune to the dreaded louse.

However, like most of the California wine industry, Mendocino County suffered near collapse during the Prohibition from 1921 - 1933. The region did not recover until the 1960s when the Parducci and Fetzer family estates rose to prominence. Other wineries followed their example. Today Read more »

  • Parducci Small Lot Blend Pinot Noir Mendocino County 2014

    Snoothrank:

Dark baking spice and oak notes with dark plum, cherry and raisin fruit. Loads of acidity on the palate giving a puckering freshness on the attack with loads of cherry, mixed berry and licorice notes leading up to a full oak spice and smoky cherry syrup finish that has notes of medicine and a creamy texture. • Rhys Alesia Chardonnay Alder Springs Vineyard 2013

    Snoothrank:

I certainly get oaky vanilla on the nose and on the tip of the tongue, but the good news is that it dissipates quickly. A much lighter wine than the nose predicted. No in-you-face oak. Instead a refreshing wine with flavors of green apple and kiwi. Nice acid tartness. Read More

  • Sandlands Carignane Mendocino County 2013

    Snoothrank:

Lightly fruited nosered berries, some dustiness. On the tongue, again, a light hit of red raspberry very (very) little suggestion of fruit sweetness. In fact, if anything there is more a suggestion of viney bitterness. Medium-bodied. To me, this one is fairly light on tannin, and the acid seems more sour than tart. I enjoy it, but it doesn... • Halcon Alturas Yorkville Highlands 2014

    Snoothrank:

Quite dark in the glass. Rustic, woodsy nose. Fair amount of red fruit on entrycherry, raspberry. Observable but fairly tame tannin and acid makes this a pretty easy drinker. Certainly, not the most complex wine in the world, but, definitely, an enjoyable one. Read More
