AVA, in Amador County, was settled in 1849 and quickly became a supply centre for the surrounding gold mining camps. However, when the gold began to disappear, so did the people. Settlers had planted vines, which were abundant by the late 1800s. After this section of the Mother Lode experienced mass exodus, it was not until the early 1970s that Fiddletown’s loam soil sported vines again. Today, most of the vineyards are on the region’s southern and western hills. They produce grapes that are less forceful in alcohol with more elegant fruit character than the rest of the valley. The appellation is responsible for about 20% of Amador's production. Sitting between 1,500-2,500 feet elevation, this appellation was recognized as distinct from its surroundings by the BATF in November, 1983. – Description from Appellation America (view original content)

  • Sobon Estate Zinfandel Fiddletown 2007

    Snoothrank:

Sobon is a big favorite of Total Wine Stores. I tried 4 the Zins (they bottle way too many zins to be reliable), and would never buy it again. All were "poor", even for the low price. Read More

  • Shenandoah Zinfandel Spec Reserve 2007

    Snoothrank:

Jammy with a smidge of spice. Slightly lean in the mouth and a slightly chalky finish. This is pretty good. Read More

  • Shenandoah Zinfandel Spec Reserve 2007

    Snoothrank:

Subtle and soft blackberries, peach and black plum skins contrast with a hint of baking spice and coconutty oak tones on the nose. Very sweetly fruited entry, nice balance with good acidity and very soft tannins give the moderately spicy but very fruity style with a soft, friendly feel. Full of sweet, vanilla toned black plum and blackberry f... Read More

  • Sobon Estate Zinfandel Fiddletown 2007

    Snoothrank:

A touch of fudge and moist earth with lovely brambly notes of sapwood, herb and wild black raspberry fruit edged with a touch of pipe tobacco. Pure black raspberry fruit on entry, very good acids, lots of sweet fruit here, nice top notes of briar and bramble. Nice purity of well-expressed yet uncomplicated fruit. A wine for drinking, not for thi... Read More

  • Sobon Estate Zinfandel Fiddletown 2007

    Snoothrank:

Not as good as the 2006 $15 and more than worth it!) but really for $13 it is ok for everyday - a bit on the fruity side - aging will help for a year or two at least but will not last that much longer I would imagine - Read More

  • Shenandoah Zinfandel Spec Reserve 2007

    Snoothrank:

A good average zinfandel. It had the classic spiciness without the jamminess of recent years. It was a little lacking in body. A good choice for those who don't like the heavy wines but want a lot of flavor. Read More

  • Fiddletown Cellars Bent Bow Amador County Zinfandel 2007

    Snoothrank:

Piercing nose of pure zinfandel brambly fruit. Not a lot of complexity at first but wonderfully intense and immediately recognizable as Zin. Gains nice notes of leather and sweet cinnamon spice with an unusual, slightly yeasty tone. A really big wine in the mouth with bags of acidity but nice, really fresh slightly herb tinged black berry/bla... Read More
