Utiel-Requena is a wine region within the Valencia province in Spain. Wines have been produced here continuously since the 7th century BC, starting with the Iberians, with continuing evolution through the Romans. Wine production managed to survive through two conditions which otherwise halted production in most of Europe: It was tolerated throughout the Moorish occupation, despite Muslim law forbidding alcohol consumption and production. And it survived Phylloxera in the late 1800s because most of the wines are produced from the Bobal grape, which is largely resistant to the pesky mites. This was a particular boom to the area during this crisis. Wines were exported through the port of Valencia to the rest of Europe, which was otherwise lacking in a source for local wine for many years until the American-hybrid grafting cure was discovered. A further boost came in the way of railroad construction connecting Utiel with the rest of Valencia.

  • Dominio de la Vega Chardonnay Blend Utiel-Requena Arte Mayor NV

From Utiel-Requena NOT Catalunya. This is a RED wine not white. This is a terrific example of bobal grape in all its glory made from vines over 90 years old. Slightly more expensive than its competitors. Great wine. Read More

  • Bodegas Iranzo Vertvs Vintage Tempranillo Utiel-Requena D.O 2009

Lightly herbal, floral and vanilla-scented blueberry and blackberry fruit greet the nose over bacon fat-coated herb and earth notes. This is lively and fresh on entry with hints of stone and herb under transparent, barely ripe raspberry fruit with some strawberry seed notes. Not powerful nor terribly complex, this is an open knit and easy going ... Read More

  • Bodegas Iranzo Vertvs Tempranillo Crianza Utiel-Requena D.O 2006

With wisps of smoke, tobacco, oily herbs and rocks on the nose, this smells intriguing with late arriving floral notes and just a hint of raspberry and nutty oak. This has a very fine texture in the mouth. Soft tannins, integrated acidity and a lovely transparent texture let this slide across the palate, delivering light washes of raspberry and ... Read More

Peppery blueberry and raspberry notes with violets on the nose. Palate offers up some of the same elements on the nose. Med bodied balanced well with fruit acid and tannins. Feminine delicate characteristics. Some light vanilla earthy notes. Neat to try a new indigenous varietal from Spain, bobal. Read More

  • Iranzo Fields Albero Sparkling White 2010

We normally don't care for most sparkling wines, but this is a very nice organic version. The flavor is cool and crisp, without being overly dry. The subtle fruitiness gives this sparkling wine just enough complexity to make it pleasureful. Read More
