Umbria Wine

Umbria is a wine region tucked in central Italy, surrounded by Tuscany, Latium and the Marche. It’s a hilly area, with many of its 11 DOC’s beginning with ‘Colli,” Italian for slope or hill. The region is landlocked, and the first civilizations, the ancient Umbri and then the Etruscans, established their villages along the Tiber river as a hydration source. If you follow the legends of saints, one of the big ones, Francis of Assisi, for which the iconic town is named, was based here.

Umbria is best known for its white wines, particularly Orvieto, produced from the Trebbiano (here sometimes called Procanico) grape. This wine accounts for the majority of all the wine produced from the region. This is kind of a little black dress of a white wine, changing in style through the decades but always in fashion. Some trends dictate a young, fresh style, while others call for more sophisticated techniques in which the juice is left in contact with the skins for longer Read more »

    Snoothrank:

Nice little Italian white blend of vermentino and verdicchio. Easy drinking, light and crisp with some light lemon, a touch of apricot, medium acidity and a short finish. This is a food friendly wine that went well with our chicken and dumplin's. Read More

  • Santa Cristina Campogrande Orvieto 2012

    Snoothrank:

I am not an expert, but I know what I like. I always have my eye out for Moscato D'Asti, as it is my favorite. I like sweet wines. I found this at a very good price ($7.49 on Sale, regularly $14.99) at Walgreen's in Wake Forest, NC. On opening it, I thought I might not like it, as the fragrance wafting up as I opened it was not appetizing. The f... Read More

  • Lagaria Pinot Grigio 2012

    Snoothrank:

Fruit filled and mineral tinged, this wine showed quite well in a blind tasting of similarly priced wines. Nicely balanced between peach, citrus and melon, and then a flinty, nutty character bringing up the finish.91pts Read More
