Crozes-Hermitage is the Northern Rhone’s largest appellation, both in terms of acreage and in terms of production. It produces mostly red wine made from Syrah, but some white wine from Marsanne and Roussanne is made as well. The wines are also often less expensive and of lower quality than those of neighboring appellations, so it’s important to familiarize oneself with the best producers, such as Graillot and Colombier. Most Crozes-Hermitage is less ageworthy and better for early drinking than other Northern Rhone wines.

  • M. Chapoutier Syrah Crozes-Hermitage les Meysonniers 2009

For a Crozes-Hermitage, this wine is hitting above weight and just full of sweet cherry and tobacco leaf on the nose; on entry, there is some black pepper, more cherry (even cranberry) and smooth, balanced tannin - though lightish compared to nearby Côte-Rôtie. The finish is medium length, but very satisfying. Excellent wine at a good price. 8... Read More

  • Delas Freres Crozes Hermitage 'Les Launes' 2009

This Delas Crozes Hermitage is lightish with a leathery prune, rye flour and cranberry (acidic fruit) nose. The body is medium with modest structure - though the balance is good and the fresh acidity is palate-cleansing. A good wine for lighter meats or on the patio. Drink now through 2015. 87 points. • For March, my tasting group explored the length of the Rhône valley.  Probably for consistency of quality, one of our best tastings to date with just about all o the wines showing well and being universally liked by all.  I was lucky to find/have access to some older vintages from estate sales and store cellars, so it made for a fun night.  Here... • Guigal E. Crozes-Hermitage White 2009

Spicy and perfumed nose filled with rich berry fruit. Also, aromas of wet stone and turned soil. Spicy berry. Has meaty richness, blueberries, black raspberries, crushed rock and flowers. Opulent and dense with an oily texture. Rich in concentrated fruit. Powerful and dense but has finesse. Pepper, charcoal and herb notes as well. Best wi... Read More

  • Crozes-Hermitage Domaine Mucyn 2009

The 2010 Crozes-Hermitage Domaine Mucyn is an outstanding, as well as reasonably priced, effort exhibiting plenty of dense black currant fruit, licorice, roasted herb, new saddle leather and spice box characteristics. Medium to full-bodied and ripe with good acidity as well as lingering, light tannins, it should drink nicely for a decade. 90/10... Read More
