Rhône Wine

Located along a section of the Rhone river in southeastern France, this is really two regions.

The northern Rhone is primarily the land of Syrah. The white wines are made from Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne. Here, the Rhone Valley narrows, forming steep terraces on which the vines grow. Cooled by the harsh mistral wind, this region has a continental climate. The major Syrah appellations are, roughly from north to south, Cote-Rotie, Condrieu (Viognier), Chateau-Grillet (Viognier; monopole), Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, and Cornas. Saint-Peray is a bit of an oddball here, producing white sparkling wines from Marsanne and Roussanne.

The southern Rhone has a milder climate that moves seamlessly into the Mediterranean climate of Provence. The red wines are made from Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsaut, and Mourvedre. The major appellations are Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, Lirac, Vacqueyras, Costieres de Nimes, and Tavel. The last of these produces only rose wine. The whites Read more »

Rhône on Snooth

  • St Cosme Cotes du Rhone 2011

    Snoothrank:

Black berries and a bunch of blue berries dominate the nose with additional oak (slight), vanillin, spice and pepper this is a lush, full mouth wine. Excellent with food, this is only lacking in aftertaste (short), otherwise this typical Saint-Cosme. Drink now - Paul 89 points Read More

  • Domaine Piaugier la Grange de Piaugier Cotes du Rhone Rouge 2014

    Snoothrank:

A good, but relatively "light' CdR as they go. There is plenty red berry fruit as that goes, the this is an earthen wine and "garrique" wine if like that sort of thing. I find it to be a refreshinf change of pace. Drink now. Paul 87 points Read More

  • DMCKER - Agreed, there are many subtleties to this question. my response ... merlot, petit sirah, blends (Rhone or otherwise) etc should all be brought into the conversation.  Washington is putting out some mean Merlot in the $25 - $35 range that age really well and consider that Spain releases it's reservas and 3 years or more of aging with m... • Domaine "La Garrugue" Cotes du Rhone Cuvee Romaine 2012

    Snoothrank:

This was very good - pepper, chocolate, red plum and Bing cherry lead the nose. This is full bodied wine with dark berries, spice and mildly chewy tannins and matching acidity. Well done with a great finish. Drink now - Paul 89 points Read More

  • St. Cosme Cotes du Rhone 2010

    Snoothrank:

Blackberries, blueberries, mocha, pepper, oak, with vanilla around the edges here and there and a succulent earthiness abound round the nose (Sounds cherry doesn't it?). The earthy tones really ride the fruit as the tannins really grip and become a little dense at times. The acidity is good and this is a steal. Would pair well with wild game a... Read More
