Rhône Wine

Located along a section of the Rhone river in southeastern France, this is really two regions.

The northern Rhone is primarily the land of Syrah. The white wines are made from Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne. Here, the Rhone Valley narrows, forming steep terraces on which the vines grow. Cooled by the harsh mistral wind, this region has a continental climate. The major Syrah appellations are, roughly from north to south, Cote-Rotie, Condrieu (Viognier), Chateau-Grillet (Viognier; monopole), Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage, and Cornas. Saint-Peray is a bit of an oddball here, producing white sparkling wines from Marsanne and Roussanne.

The southern Rhone has a milder climate that moves seamlessly into the Mediterranean climate of Provence. The red wines are made from Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsaut, and Mourvedre. The major appellations are Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, Lirac, Vacqueyras, Costieres de Nimes, and Tavel. The last of these produces only rose wine. The whites Read more »

  • Great thank you for your help.  To update, the Coles du Rhone has residue at the bottom of the bottle so I didn't think that was a good sign to start with, then when I opened it, it smelled good but tasted terrible.  So that one's out - I don't drink Riesling anyway, its too sweet for my taste and its 20 years old so that doesn't seem like somet... • Gabriel Meffre Cotes-du-Rhone "Saint Vincent" 2013

    Snoothrank:

In seeking out some good restaurant whites for the summer, I came across this Rhone white which reflects the inclusion of Roussanne in the blend - lending the nose a subtle white fruit scent of kiwi, gooseberry, fresh concrete and soft herbs. The entry is soft, with spring water cleanliness and pear-like flavours. For the price, you get gentle... Read More

  • Louis Bernard Côtes du Rhône Blanc 2013

    Snoothrank:

This edition of the Louis Bernard Southern Rhone white blend is consistent with prior vintages - to wit, it has an appetizing nose of citrus fruit, kiwi, and perhaps peach while the flavours are toward the side of gooseberry and other tart white berries or fruit. Very palate cleansing and easy drinking for parties. Great value. 87 points. Read More

Rhone as AOA, but Cornas is a little more in the value realm.  ($50 for any Hermitage is pretty much a steal these days, isn't it?  I bought a little Colombier a few years back for $40, but not seeing anything like that these days. I did manage to la... Read More
