Sancerre Wine

 

Sancerre is an appellation located in the so-called Upper Loire -- the eastern end of the Loire Valley. It is best known for its brisk, mineral white wines, made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape, though red and rose Sancerre, made from Pinot Noir, is increasingly popular.

Just as in Chablis, the chalky-white Kimmeridgian soil is what really sets the wines apart from those in nearby appellations. Named after a town in Dorset which also shares this geological formation, Kimmeridgian soil is a combination of clay and limestone filled with billions of tiny, fossilized oyster shells. Unsurprisingly, Sancerre goes exceptionally well with oysters.
