Beaujolais Nouveau is a style of young, fresh wine produced in the Beaujolais region, adjacent to Burgundy, France. Every year, these are released on the third Thursday of November, with much fanfare that “Les Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé!!!” What began as a local tradition in the 19th century, made popular in Parisian cafés in the 1950s, has become an actual race for worldwide distribution. Every method of transportation imaginable has been used to ensure arrival by midnight of that Thursday (to release any time before is strictly prohibited), and its many fans can open a fresh bottle that very day. This style accounts for nearly half the entire region’s annual output.

To get technical, this a primeur style of wine, which simply means that it is released between its harvest date and the following spring. It’s not uncommon in other parts of the world, but Beaujolais Nouveau is the most popular and sought after. But isn’t wine supposed to age a bit Read more »

  • What varietals do you think would match my fruit-driven palette well, such as Saint Amour, Morgon, Moulin-a-Vent and Brouilly?  My budget limit is $25.Not sure what that means. All of those are crus in the Beaujolais region. The grape variety (varietal is an adjective) is going to be Gamay or Chardonnay. So all of them will be the same. The diff... Read More

  • Mommessin Beaujolais Nouveau 2014

    Snoothrank:

The 2014 Mommessin Beaujolais Nouveau is, as usual, quite different in style from the typical (cf.Duboeuf) offering; the nose is quite dumb (mute), and on entry is more brooding and serious with dark fruit (and plum) dominant. Very smooth, but none of the tropical fruit many of you no doubt expect. Still, an easy drinking primeur with more grav... Read More

  • Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau 2014

    Snoothrank:

The 2014 Beaujolais Nouveau seems deeper, darker and less thin and acidic - the latter properties being largely responsible for the decline of Nouveau - until recently. The scent is of candied red fruit... with tropical notes such as ripe sweet banana. The entry is quick, slightly acidic with good fruit. Not bitter or tasting of stems this time... Read More

  • Georges Dubeouf Beaujolais Nouveau 2013

    Snoothrank:

The 2013 vintage was difficult and it shows in this year's Nouveau; although the inviting tropical fruit (banana, mango) on the nose is there, the palate receives fairly watery fair... with a hint of stem-like tannin and raspberry cordial. Finish is short and a bit acerbic. Perhaps unfair to compare with 2009 and 2010 but there you have it. 83... Read More
