Beaujolais Nouveau is a style of young, fresh wine produced in the Beaujolais region, adjacent to Burgundy, France. Every year, these are released on the third Thursday of November, with much fanfare that “Les Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé!!!” What began as a local tradition in the 19th century, made popular in Parisian cafés in the 1950s, has become an actual race for worldwide distribution. Every method of transportation imaginable has been used to ensure arrival by midnight of that Thursday (to release any time before is strictly prohibited), and its many fans can open a fresh bottle that very day. This style accounts for nearly half the entire region’s annual output.

To get technical, this a primeur style of wine, which simply means that it is released between its harvest date and the following spring. It’s not uncommon in other parts of the world, but Beaujolais Nouveau is the most popular and sought after. But isn’t wine supposed to age a bit Read more »

Beaujolais Nouveau on Snooth

  • Georges Dubeouf Beaujolais Nouveau 2013

    Snoothrank:

The 2013 vintage was difficult and it shows in this year's Nouveau; although the inviting tropical fruit (banana, mango) on the nose is there, the palate receives fairly watery fair... with a hint of stem-like tannin and raspberry cordial. Finish is short and a bit acerbic. Perhaps unfair to compare with 2009 and 2010 but there you have it. 83... Read More

  • Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Noveau Red Burgundy Red 2010

    Snoothrank:

This wine does have a beautiful and enticing nose but unfortunately in my book the taste is a bit of a let down. The tannins leave you feeling its a bit like every other dark in its price range. There simply is not enough variety to have me pick up this bottle again. Read More

  • It’s not often that I recommend that you don’t drink a particular ... young but not in a vibrant Beaujolais Nouveau sort of way. It needs more time to develop into what will be crucial to its deep character. Ripe raspberry, black cherry, and spices mingling with toasted oak are now faint and watery but hint at more complex flavor interplays to... Read More

  • Mommessin Beaujolais Nouveau 2012

    Snoothrank:

Nice inviting tropical fruit nose with some banana and mango (especially the scent one finds in certain hard candy). Mommessin is usually deeper and more substantial, but this one is middling in stature. The palate receives a semi-sweet juiciness, with none of the stemmy acerbity of the past year. The mouthfeel is, overall, pleasant and someth... Read More
