The Coquimbo Valley is a region that encompasses the Elqui, Limarí and Choapa Valleys in northern Chile. The low altitude area is very hot and dry, close to the Atacama desert.
Most of the grapes in the region are harvested for the distillation of Pisco, the national brandy. However, some quality wine production has emerged in recent years thanks to modern irrigation and rock-clearing for plantings in places with higher altitudes into the Andes.
Red wines are produced mainly from Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Whites from Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.

  • Viña Falernia Pedro Ximénez 2010

Typically used to make Pisco in Chile, the small plantings of Pedro Ximenez used for still table wine is really only seen in the Elqui Valley of Chile. Elqui is one of Chile's northernmost wine regions and quite a mystical place in and of itself; it's no wonder they are experimenting with turning this grape into wine and it's actually not too ba...
