Colchagua Valley Wine

Colchagua Valley is set close to the Coastal Range and to the sea. It is largely recognized as a traditional wine-growing region and is one of the best-known in Chile. This region offers big red wines, 90% of the region’s plantings, made from Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, and old vine Malbec. Climates in Colchagua vary, ranging from the Andes foothills to the cooler areas of Marchigue and Lolol which are closer to the Pacific Ocean.

There is a large range of soils here from fertile alluvial soils on the valley floor to sand and decomposed granite on the hillsides; in the west, schist, volcanic sands, and slate can also be found. Some of Chile’s top wineries are located in the Colchagua Valley and take great advantage of the hilly terrain to achieve optimum ripeness. Micro-areas such as Apalta, where Lapostelle’s Clos Apalta and Montes’ Alpha ‘M’ can be found, San Fernando, and Chimbarango offer more significant diurnal differences which help to bring out Read more »

  • Natura Syrah 2005

I found it to be complex and enjoyable. Well balanced with hints of vanilla, chocolate and pepper. A deep purple finish with lots of dark berry notes. I believe it aged very well and was a great price! Read More

  • Root 1 Cabernet Sauvignon Colchagua Valley 2013

Black fruit and black pepper aromas with a bit of a green note and some herb. Quite spicy in the mouth with toast and blackberry flavors and some bright red fruit shocking the front of the palate with fresh acidity and some herbal notes and a finish of black cherry and cream. Read More

  • Los Vascos Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Beautiful ruby color. The nose opens with intense notes of fresh red fruit, such as cherries and strawberries, lighlty underscored with aromas of thyme, bay and mint. Superb volume on the palate, with soft yet well-defined tannins. A wine with a fine balance of fruit. Read More

  • Cono Sur Organic Cab/Carmenere 2013

Purpleish tones and nice legs running down the glass define the appearance. Spicy, yet jammy fruits, some dark, make up the general aroma profile...think deep blackberries and freshly ground black pepper! Flavors follow suit, with dry, yet expressive spice, and mellow rich berry fruits. Overall a nice wine and does very well for a high alcoho... Read More

  • Little Owl Carmenere Syrah Reserva

Very surprised someone is selling this for $8.49 in NY, I flagged it but it could be true. I don't know if they have different prices in different areas of NYS but it doesn't really add up to me... probably like $11 or $12, but this is good, very full bodied, dry but dark fruity plums and blackberries Read More
