- Charles Shaw, more commonly known as 2-Buck chuck, is a line of wines that was created to take advantage of two distinct situations arising from very diverse causes.
- The first was the marketplace's ever expanding appetite for affordable wines, and by affordable we mean, really affordable. As the nickname implies, Charles Shaw wines were originally sold to $1.99 per bottle.
- The second factor that came into the equation, and in fact allowed for the creation of the brand, was the global wine glut of recent years. With shifting tastes and new vineyards coming to production the world has been faced with a virtual sea of wine waiting to be sold. Unable to move all this wine on their own, wineries were reluctant but relieved when someone with the clout of Charles Shaw came along and offered them anything for their wine, wine that might have otherwise simply been dumped for distillation, if not poured down the drain simply to make space for the next vintage.
- Because Charles Shaw does not have consistent sources for the wines they bottle, the blends tend to vary greatly from vintage to vintage if not lot to lot. While this may cause occasional disappointments, the price is ripe for experimentation.
