Our Estate San Saba Vineyard is sheltered in a nook just below the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA, roughly 25 miles southeast of the town of Monterey. Our climate is heavily influenced by the morning fog and afternoon winds from the nearby Pacific Ocean. This is a cool site with little rainfall and one of the longest growing seasons in the world. Our unusual climate allows us produce ripe, concentrated wines of exceptional balance. Our site’s soils are primarily composed of Arroyo Gravelly Loam and Hanford Gravely Sandy Loam. The Hanford Gravely Sandy Loam comes from the SLH bench just above our vineyard. In addition to its excellent drainage properties, our site is essentially free of disease and pests allowing us to plant and farm a portion of our property with own-rooted vines.

  • At the risk of incurring the wrath of some of the other contributors, my standard for restaurant wine pricing has always been 2 X retail--and by "retail" I mean street price, not winery price.  As mentioned some of the wines on that list come right it at 2 X retail.  So, if you know the street price of the wines in which you are interested, then... • Wrath Chardonnay Monterey Ex Anima 2010

Label says little to no oak ageing, well there must have been some significant malo because this is a fairly big buttery oak bomb. Fairly one dimensional with little fruit and a touch of acidity and all that fat butter and oak. Read More

  • I am a big fan of white wines-particularly sauvignon blanc from NZ but the more I read the more I find that red wine is actually a healthy part of a good diet (unless you drink too much). So I started trying various red wines but they seemed so heavy to me that I longed for something lighter with less tannins and less density (?). I tried some p... Read More

  • I'm vaugely thinking about a visit to the USA and Canada maybe early next year. I should note that it's still very, very much a vague plan, and nothing is set in stone -- but I do have to decide what I'd like to do first so I can see whether it's all actually workable. Naturally visiting a couple of wine regions in both countries will be part of... Read More
