Nikolai Stez is the Woodenhead winemaker. He has been at fermentation since he was a boy making the traditional Russian drink "kvas" (a fermented bread or fruit drink) that his immigrant parents taught him to make. In college, he made wines for his biology and botany classes, and started making home wines in earnest since 1986. Nick worked for 17 years of crush fun for the famous "two guys in a garage cult winery" that put Russian River Valley Pinot on the map. Working for Burt Williams as an assistant winemaker confirmed his life's passion for wine. Born in San Francisco and living on the Russian River since age one, he considers the North Coast his back yard and knows it well, from Sonoma County north to Humboldt and Del Norte. The coast range is his playground. Nick also works as a building contractor in Sonoma County. Zina Bower is the other part of the equation here, an escapee from L.A. and Nick's domestic partner. She was bitten by the wine bug in 1982 and has been intoxicated with passion for Read more »

  •  Wow, we had a great time last night. Hopefully Foxall will have a chance to put his spin on things. I didn't take any notes, just 2 pictures but I lined up some of the dead soldiers this morning. 15 people, over 30 different wines and not a single dud except for a sweet/syrupy/candied 2001 Rosenblum Monte Rosso Zinfandel. But enough for the bad... Read More

  • Woodenhead Pinot Noir Wet Kiss Russian River Valley 2010

    Snoothrank:

A little smoky and rich, with dried cherry aromas topped with lightly spicy rhubarb top notes. This is crystal clear on the palate, though with a hint of toasty sweetness that lends this a bit of softness in the mouth even though theres significant acidity supporting the slight earthy, slightly tree bark-edged cranberry fruit. That fruit is nice... Read More

  • Woodenhead Pinot Noir Anderson Valley Wiley Vineyard 2009

    Snoothrank:

A hint of candied stem greets the nose along with a very floral aroma that is light and high-toned on the nose with a hint of medicinal licorice-based spice and ginseng. Soft, broad and supple in the mouth yet not lacking structure, theres a biggish core of black cherry fruit with hint of strawberry and something vaguely recalling pineapple on t... Read More

  • Woodenhead Vintners Pinot Noir Humboldt County 2008

    Snoothrank:

Loamy on the nose and full of sweet root vegetables, beet root, caramel and root beer aromas packed into the powerful earthy nose. On entry, this shows nice acid-driven yet very ripe raspberry fruit with a silky, supple texture backed up by plenty of spice, forest floor and incipient mushroom notes. The super fine tannins add plenty of texture h... Read More

  • Woodenhead Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 2008

    Snoothrank:

A little high-toned, with floral edges to the dusty sweet red fruit that shows a hint of tariness on the nose along with a streak of obvious but unobtrusive French Oak, which is more spicy than toasty. This is a touch soft on entry, with easy red fruit and vanilla ice cream flavors that pick up a nice hint of forest floor and a touch of minerali... Read More

  • Woodenhead Zinfandel Martinelli Road Vineyard Old Vine Russian River Valley 2007

    Snoothrank:

Intense, almost candied aromas of toasty oak, sandlewood, a little white pepper, and dried cranberry rise from the glass. This is surprisingly light on the palate, full of deep red berry fruit; the alcohol is obvious, if not particularly intrusive, though it does become more bothersome on the finish. Theres lots of candied cherry and strawberry ... Read More

  • Woodenhead Zinfandel Mendocino County Guido Venturi Vineyard 2009

    Snoothrank:

Macerated strawberries are layered over dusty slate, white pepper and rose on the nose. In the mouth, this is smooth and polished, with a lovely flavor profile that features very ripe dark macerated black cherry and plum fruit but remains fresh and transparent. Theres a touch of tannin on the palate finish, which is short and light with a hint o... Read More
