Yes, there really is a Joe! Joe Dobbes is the man behind your bottle of Wine By Joe. As the sole owner and winemaker of Wine By Joe, LLC, Joe is a busy guy. As he says, "Passion fuels endless energy." Joe has been making wine in Oregon for over twenty years and his passion increases with each vintage. Driven to excellence in his art, Joe Dobbes is the consummate winemaker. Raised in a small town in the north Willamette Valley and educated in Ashland, Joe is a true Oregonian and is dedicated to Oregon wines. Yet his calling began outside Oregon, in Germany and France, where Joe spent 2 1⁄2 years learning the art and science of winemaking. He apprenticed at Wiengut Erbhof Tesch, in the German Nahe region and at Domaine G. Roumier and Domaine Comtes Lafon in the Burgundy region, France, with winemasters Christophe Roumier and Dominque Lafon. – Description from AlexJelena

  • Reading Judt's "Postwar" right now and it makes me want to read a really good biography of Tito and a history of Yugoslavia. Macedonia is interesting because there's the Greek and the Yugoslav histories.  Tito got in trouble with Stalin for wanting to expand into Greek Macedonia--among other things.  I am friends with a Macedonian family whose l... • Red - one of the problems with recs for places like World Market and Total Wine is that you have to get the recommendations from someone in your area. The stores will have similar wines in most places, but there may be local differences, based on what's available from the local distributors. My suggestion is to look at Costco if there's one near... • Had a great first full day here in south central California. Started off with a very good breakfast at the ForFriends B&B in Santa Ynez. Too early for any of the tasting rooms to be open so we headed down to Jalama beach for some salt air and scenery. Beautiful beach with some interesting campsites and about a half dozen surfers enjoying some mo... Read More

  • This past Thursday was a very nice evening out on the town (Washington DC).  We started with a tasty dinner at Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak and Stone Crab - a place we've dined before and loved.   This night we arrived about 30 minutes before the dining room opened, so we sat at the bar next to two interesting gentlemen.  Sandra wanted a 1/2 dozen... • Long Shadows seems like a guest chef program, but in wine.  In college, our dining program would bring in chefs from around the US about four times a year under the "Cross Country Gourmet" rubric.  There was a lottery type system with a limited number of seats, and someone would come from a resto and we'd get a decent meal on our own turf.  LS g... • Can anyone help me figure out the difference between the Dave Phinney (Orin Swift) Locations F1, F2 and F3 wines. I tried one that was listed as a 2011 vintage. I did not see the bottle and don't know which to look for. Do the 1, 2 and 3 correspond to vintage? Any clarification is appreciated.  Read More

  • Al, I am inclined to agree with DM and OT about the veracity of that article.  I think the takeaway from their comments is that wine and winemaking are very complicated and generalizations can break down quickly.  On the other hand, it might be useful to casual wine drinkers who are looking for easy-to-follow generalizations.  I think that for 9...
