Originally established in 1855 as the Old Moore Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Wild Turkey is one of Kentucky's most famous whiskeys. It was purchased by the Ripy brothers in 1905. In 1940, executive Thomas McCarthy selected some 101 proof straight bourbon for a turkey hunt. The next year his friends asked him for "some of that wild turkey whiskey", and a brand was born. Austin Nichols purchased the company in 1970 and was purchased by the French drinks conglomerate Pernod Ricard in 1980. Although Wild Turkey's recipe remains a closely guarded secret, the company has revealed that it uses a higher proportion of malted barley and rye in its bourbons lending them more complexity and spicy pepper notes. It is distilled to 115 proof and aged in heavily charred barrels. Wild Turkey's line currently includes: -an 80 proof bourbon -an 86.8 proof bourbon -a 101 proof bourbon -8-year-old bourbon (101 proof) -12-year-old bourbon (101 proof) -Kentucky Spirit, a single-barrel bourbon (101 proof) -Rare Breed, a barrel Read more »

  • With the holidays fast approaching, this is the time of the year when most of us begin to look for wines that are a cut above our average, wines that deliver something special yet hopefully do not break the bank while doing so. There are many possible routes to take, but Rioja Reserva offers a unique opportunity to bring that something special t... Read More

  •  I'm rather new to wine. I've only had de-alcoholized red wines from Ariel and I've had some red and white wines with some relatives who really know their wine. I remember enjoying it very much. But recently I've gotten into wine on my own. I recently picked up some Yellow Tail Shiraz from a nearby Total Wine store. Specifically, I picked up a f... Read More

  • Thought it would be a great idea for us to take part in trading some of our favorite wines to each other this holiday season. Something in the $30 - 40+ range retail sounds about right (best if found at cheaper/cheapest retailer), and the wines should be ready to drink now so we can all post about our impressions of the wines we were given, but ... • So, I have a recipe calling for a Madeira.  I understand this is a "pre-cooked" wine and would probably taste great...but I can't seem to find a damn bottle under $30.  I hesitate to spend that much on a bottle i need 3/4 cup of.  Any suggestions for alternatives?  Making a beef and mushroom dish. Thanks! • Weller Centennial was simply the best whiskey I have ever tasted.  100 ... and 16, all the Beam brands, Wild Turkey Rare Breed, and on and on.  Before I geeked on wine, I geeked on Bourbon, and consumed prodigious amounts in my 20s and early 30s.  But this was head and shoulders better. Alas, it went out of production for a few years and then ...
