Residing to the north of the Great Dividing Range in Central Victoria, the region is at elevations between 160m and 380m. For the most part, the soil under vine is of the pre-Cambrian era - red and deep with excellent water holding capacity, although the regions most sort-after and expensive wines come from the predominately clay with granite and quartz inclusions of the Southern and Central sub-regions. The region’s rainfall is evenly distributed between the seasons and the temperature range is defined as temperate, with cooling winds emanating from the south. It is our belief that the Heathcote Wine Region will eventually be divided up into three sub-regions (Northern, Central and Southern) as there is a distinct difference in the flavour and structure of the wines coming from these individual areas. These differences are due to the influences of the local ‘terroir’. – Description from mriskic

  • So we have some interest in having a West Coast meet-up (or you can call it a throw-down) for Pinot.  Here's my opening proposal:  We'll do it very close to the Oakland Airport, to save those who are traveling in from out of town (like Emark and JonDerry) from having extra travel if they want to fly.  This would give LuchaVino a chance to attend... • After last week’s look at value-oriented Zinfandel, I was pretty excited to jump into and taste some higher end wines. I love Zinfandel’s many iterations. From the Claret styles of yore to the fruit bombs that have made bold headlines and big points over the past decade, there is a great variety of styles well suited to many cuisines. Of course,... • People are not going to like what I have to say here, but that is okay, this is not a popularity contest. I do not write about wine to gather as many friends or followers as possible. I write about wine because I love wine and while I know my palate sometimes strays outside of the mainstream, so be it. I know many other people share my tastes or... Read More

  • Wild Duck Creek Shiraz Heathcote Springflat 2008

    Snoothrank:

Lots of oak on the nose. Rich chocolate scents are joined by spicy herbal tones, vanilla, leather, blackberry and some plummy notes. Comes off as a touch sweet on entry, but is followed by lovely, spicy herbal nuances and some cedary/toasty oak. The tannins are firm but remain beneath the fruit here, which is rich yet quite fresh, turning much ... Read More

  • Zinfandel is an American treasure. There are great old-vine vineyards around the globe that range from Nero d’Avola in Italy to Grenache in Spain and Malbec in Argentina, but only in California can we find the finest examples of Zinfandel.
