A long-standing member of the Santa Barbara winemaking community, Chris Whitcraft is obsessed with producing the highest quality wines. His signature varietals are pinot noir, chardonnay and syrah. These individuals were major influences in Chris' passion for pinot noir - a varietal with amazing potential which is notoriously difficult to master. Working with them, he came to appreciate the importance of selecting the finest grapes and, in the winemaking process, enabling the natural qualities of that fruit to come through. Chris' early success in producing high-quality wines enabled him to secure grape contracts from leading Read more »

  • JD, it looks like you can buy Whitcraft wine on the winery website or at their tasting room in Santa Barbara. Chris Whitcraft died in June of this year, and his son Drake has taken over the business. No telling if that will affect the wines.Tyler has a tasting room in the Lompoc wine ghetto, so I should be able to make it over there. Habit doesn... Read More

  • I go to S. Calif every winter to visit family and drive up to Santa Barbara for a day to visit vineyards. We've now been to quite a few vineyards and among our favorites are Zaca Mesa, Koehler and Bridlewood.  But the stand-out vineyard was Demetria. You need a reservation to visit, but it's worth it. It's at the end of a long winding private ro... Read More

  • Whitcraft Winery Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley Aubaine Vineyard 2008

Very fragrant and floral nose with plum and spice notes. The palate shows very good fruit with dried flowers, spice, and blackberry pie, framed with lively acidity. Nothing more than a medium finish, but another very good effort for this wine, from a rarely seen pinot clone #667. A decent buy even at the $60 level. 91-92 points. Read More

  • Soo... based on some other threads, the topic of Burgundies vs. CA pinots has arisen.  I, being a French virgin, would love to hear more about burgundies.  They are NOT my expertise at all... and to be honest, I have only tasted one, and it ended up being oxidized (sommelier agreed). My expertise tends to lie with Northern California coastal pin...
