Three vineyards, four Zinfandels and one shared passion for the pursuit of small lot, single-vineyard wines are the driving force behind one of California's newest wineries, Z-52 . Seasoned winemaker Philip Zorn and veteran wine executive Brent Shortridge wear all the hats at Z-52, and their dedication to distinctive Zinfandels is evident at every turn. The heart and soul of this boutique winery, named for the shared “Z” in both Zinfandel and Zorn, (the 52 references the 52 weeks in a vintage year, 52 rows in Agnes' Vineyard, and 52 cards in a full deck) is its commitment to producing high-end Zinfandels from some of the oldest vineyards in the Lodi and Amador County regions. Z-52 ‘s minimalist approach to winemaking embraces the notion that terroir and its influence on grape character is essential to producing outstanding Zinfandel.

  • I see probably a half dozen or more wines on that list from Gallo that I drink or would drink without a problem.  Martin Codax is effectively a version of Gallo for certain regions of Spain--they made, distributed, and exported all kinds of stuff.  Good Albarino, if not stellar.  Wm Hill was a nice place to visit last year and the stuff they sel... • Last week I wrote up some reviews on “value priced” Pinot Noir, and I received a few comments asking if it was worth spending a few more dollars on wines costing a bit more. It was a fair question, and one I myself had explored just a week or two early when I compared “value priced” Sauvignon Blancs with wines costing just a few dollars more. Th... Read More

  • Waterstone Pinot Noir Carneros 2009

The modest age here does show through on the nose where one finds a bit of a sweet earthiness and some tarry tertiary notes adding complexity to the core of candied, vanilla scented black fruit. Smooth and initially almost delicate in the mouth, this quickly becomes dominated by the oak with little fruit left to buffer the wood tannins and modes... Read More

  • Waterstone Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2010

Attractive in the glass. Some oaky bouquet, some leathery, soil aromas. Initial palate sensation is that this is a fairly light Cab. Flavors are primarily earthy. Tannin sneaks up on you. Since the initial impression is that the wine is watery, the fact that after a couple tastes, there is a lot of around-the-edges-of-the-tonge dryness come... Read More

  • Jon turned me on to the Waterstone the other day, but I haven't cracked it, yet.I can usually get Chateau Chevalier Cabernet for <$20 (barely).  Ch. • Waterstone Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2009

Smoky on the nose yet bright with fresh red currant and lightly jammy blackberry fruit, all cupped in a gently sweet vanilla note. A touch rough around the edges, this shows some noticeable wood tannin in the mouth with good acidity adding some freshness to the dark cherry/blackberry flavors. There's also noticeable oak sweetening the palate an... Read More
