Description 2 of 2

The Wagner family has been growing grapes on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake for four generations with the fifth presently working in the vineyards and learning the family traditions. Our proximity to Seneca Lake - the deepest of the Finger Lakes - is optimum for grape growing. The lake's huge volume of water remains unfrozen in the winter months, serving as a temperature moderator and allowing many tender grape varieties to be grown. Proximity to the lake coupled with sloping, well drained glacial soils has proven to be an ideal region for growing a variety of grapes. We currently farm 250 acres of grapes for our estate winery. In the last few years we have focused new plantings and wine production on Riesling, the undisputed "gem of the Finger Lakes", with over 50 acres of Riesling grapes planted. Riesling is the one vinifera variety that thrives in virtually any Finger Lakes growing season. Whether hot or cool, dry or wet, Riesling consistently produces high quality wines. We are looking forward to the 2009 harvest as it will be Wagner Vineyards 31st vintage. Visit our unique facility for a guided tour of the winery and wine cellar, taste a diverse selection of wines and craft-brewed beers. Browse the gift shop, stop in at The Ginny Lee restaurant for lunch, or relax and enjoy the scenic grounds that over look our vinifera vineyards, Seneca Lake and the far hills. – Description from Finger Lakes Fan
