Curious by nature and eager to embrace new adventures, it didn’t take much for friend and winemaker Helen Turley to inspire in Bill the desire to try his hand at Pinot Noir. In 1992, under a new W. H. Smith Wines label, the Smiths released their first vintage of Sonoma County Pinot Noir. Passionate for Pinot, in 1994 Bill and Joan purchased 360 acres along the Sonoma Coast on a ridge high above the town of Cazadero. The first vintage of Maritime Ridge Vineyards—the Smith's rising star—was harvested in 2002 and was released in the spring of 2004. – Description from Kursulla

  • So we have some interest in having a West Coast meet-up (or you can call it a throw-down) for Pinot.  Here's my opening proposal:  We'll do it very close to the Oakland Airport, to save those who are traveling in from out of town (like Emark and JonDerry) from having extra travel if they want to fly.  This would give LuchaVino a chance to attend... • I am a dyed in the wool fan of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlots, Sangiovese's and a few Chardonnays and Pinot Grigio's. I am trying to widen my spectrum to include Pinot Noir's. I live in the Pacific Northwest so the Pinot Noir's are readily available due to the large varieties from Oregon. Before I embark on purchasing some different brands I would l... Read More

  • Let's start with a fact:A gallon of water weighs 8.35 pounds (US, not UK).How much would you estimate that a thick, viscous wine like Chateau d'Yquem weighs in comparison?  What would that ratio be like to water? If I had to take a stab- and mind you this is a bit of a stab in the dark, I would venture an estimate ratio of:1.25:1, Yquem to Water.... • W.H. Smith Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 2007

    Snoothrank:

An amazing disappointment! Thin, light, and didn't approve appreciably with breathing. This was part of a horizontal tasting I did 05/16/10. Worst rated wine out of seven other 2007 Sonoma pinots. Others included: Kenwood, Trader Joe's, Blackstone, CastleRock, La Crema, Meiomi. Read More
