Mike and Renae Matson combine over 40 years of marriage with 30+ years of co-managing various businesses, the latest being Vino Con Brio and Amorosa Inn and Gardens. They have three adult children living in Northern California as well. Together they stay current on wine industry trends by regularly attending classes at the University of California, Davis, and travel extensively enjoying wines from around the world. Recent destinations have included New Zealand and Australia! Their next trip will be to Greece, Croatia, Israel and Egypt in the fall of 2009. In the vineyard, Mike monitors test plots and experiments with trellising programs and clonal selections. He has a particular interest in bringing unique grape varietals from other countries to Lodi and in promoting Lodi wines. Renae runs the bed & breakfast, Amorosa Inn and Gardens. • On Saturday morning, while I was having my coffee and bagel, it occurred to me that it would be fun to drive up to the Central Coast and visit some wineries.  It took about 20 milliseconds to convince Peggy that this was a good idea.  I did have to take care of one issue at the bank.  (In fact, the bank visit was totally unsuccessful and that is... • Vino Con Brio Red Rhone Blend Lodi Vibrante 2008

Very nice red with good balance. Somewhat big red fruit from the petite sirah but was rounded off nicely by the zin, syrah and viognier. Much better and smoother after being open an hour or two. Read More

  • I'm fairly new to wine tasting, but I've noticed something: Most Zinfandels I have tried really just haven't rubbed me the right way. I'm always excited when the opp presents itself to me to try them, because I tell myself, "Surely, I just haven't had the right one!" Is this the right frame of mine? Have I not just had the right Zin? Or are Zins... Read More

  • Vino Con Brio Zinfandel Lodi Matzin Old Vine 2005

From 70+ year old wines, this is a deep, rich Zinfandel. Blackberries, spice and plums predominate the aromas. Hints of chocolate and cedar round out the expansive nose. The small amount of Petite Sirah brings a complex black pepper impression. Flavors follow in the pepper and plum theme. Full and ripe the body is enjoyable without being overdo... Read More
