Chuck and Anne McMinn acquired the stewardship of Vineyard 29 in 2000 and began its evolution from a single vineyard to a full scale winery. In 1989, Teresa Norton and Tom Paine came to Napa Valley to retire - a dream that was quickly replaced by another when they learned their estate was prime cabernet sauvignon territory. In a matter of weeks, they were putting in a 3-acre vineyard under the watchful eye of lauded vineyard manager David Abreu and, within a year, planting cuttings from neighbors, Grace Family Vineyards. The first release in 1992 was warmly received by press and public alike. The turn of the century ushered in the next phase of Vineyard 29. Along with the Vineyard 29 property, Chuck and Anne acquired the historic Aida vineyard in 2000 as a perfect complement to the Vineyard 29 site for expansion of the winery’s portfolio. With a new, state-of-the-art winemaking facility, and the unquestionable skill of winemaker Philippe Melka, all the pieces were in place for Chuck and Anne to lead Vineyard 29 to a new and exciting level of winemaking. Today, we continue to pride ourselves on caring for fruit down to the single berry and believe in the crafting of memorable wines from the vineyard soil up. Read more »

  • Hi all!Hoping to wade into interesting wine talk (and food talk).  Me, I've been seriously enjoying and exploring wine for just over 20 years. On the red side, right now I'm partial to wines from Spain and the Rhone valley, but other loves are Oregon pinots, really good Italian wines (yes, it's endless, but that's the fun), and wanting to try mu... • Yesterday I presented a brief overview of Washington state to help put what follows in context. I spent a week traveling the region recently and was franklyunsure of how these articles would play out. I didn’t know exactly what to expect and was prepared to write apair of articles on Washington Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, as well as Syrah, bu... Read More

  • Liver what? It’s that great wine region you’ve never heard of. Less than an hour from San Francisco. A growing wine scene based on a century and a half of history. Great climate, friendly people, tasting rooms that are not filled to capacity with people you don’t want to be rubbing shoulders with. You know, one of those regions that is truly up ... Read More

  • It’s a great thing when things just come together. Earlier this year I had planned a trip to California to do some tasting but it had to be postponed. When I went to reschedule I noticed a thread in the Snooth Forum  that was looking for people to join in a West Coast Pinot Noir Throw Down. I wasn’t sure what exactly that entailed but I am alway... • Sunset Hills Estate Club Select Block 29 Cabernet Franc 2010

    Snoothrank:

Very bright color with brilliant clarity. Nice depth to nose with notes of plum and pine. GREAT mouthfeel - perhaps thanks to well-integrated and balanced acidity. Silky smooth on the palate with subtle tannins. Not overpoweringly fruity. Read More

  • We tend to think of Pinot Noir when we think of Oregon and for good reason. Not only are Oregon’s Pinots outstanding, in a cool climate yet mostly modern style, but lots of people love to tell you about them. Yours truly included. Well here’s something else we should be talking about when it comes to Oregon: white wines. Pinot blanc has been Ore... Read More

  • You have to love Australia’s red wines. If for nothing else than the sheer simplicity of twisting off a baker’s dozen of screw-caps as opposed to setting out to fight with so many corks. OK that’s not a tremendous motivation to get you to try these wines but it was a sweet sight for my sore eyes, or hand as the case may be. Some of these wines w... Read More

  • I’ve already written up the Grenache based wines I tasted during my time in Santa Barbara, they can be found here: Grenache - The Next Pinot Noir?  so today I am focusing on most of the remaining wines that I tasted while in the region. I’ll save the few Pinots I Tasted for a Pinot round-up, which might surprise some folks. You see I went to San... Read More
