Viña Santa Carolina

Viña Santa Carolina was founded in 1875 by spirited, Chilean business visionary, Mr. Luis Pereira Cotapos. The name Santa Carolina was born from his wife and great love, Mrs. Carolina Iñiguez Vicuña. At this time, winemaking in Chile was really coming into its own. Although wine had been present in South America since the 1500s, it wasn’t until the mid 1800’s wine was widely consumed outside of religious purposes. Rich Chilean families were inspired by the French society including their luxury and love for good food and wine. As a result, Pereira decided to start vineyards in Chile with the classical Bordeaux grape varieties such as Cabernet and Merlot, and bring French viticultural expert, Germain Bachelet. The house in which Bachelet resided still remains a part of the Santa Carolina properties. In 1975, Viña Santa Carolina was purchased by the prestigious Larrain family; by 1986 Viña Santa Carolina was one of the top Chilean brands exported to the US Read more »

  • Santa Carolina Carmenere Reserve 2013

    Snoothrank:

Classic Carmenere on the nose with lovely currant fruit framed with assertive herbal, dill, and minty aromas. A touch soft in the mouth though with good clarity and acids that arrive a bit later on the palate. This is an easy going example, with sparse yet firm tannins that keep this a bit tense and subtly ornery on the palate. The fruit is sim... Read More

  • Santa Carolina Carmenere Reserva Estate 2012

    Snoothrank:

Lovely aromas of dried and braised herbs greet the nose along with layers of toasty and slightly nutty oak, dried mushroom, and very rich and pure currant fruit with a hint of purple plum as a top note. Smooth and to a degree quite restrained considering the aromatics. this is classically structure with some firm but well measured tannins focusi... Read More

  • With one final nod to experimentation this year, I’m leaving you with this suggestion for fall: Try some Carmenere! It’s a variety that I’ve been pushing as a mid-weight summer red because it is a great wine with grilled meats, but it’s also a lovely wine for fall, though perhaps best used with some well seasoned, herb-dotted pork dishes as the ... • After last week’s disappointing look at value priced Zinfandel you would be right to think that this week’s take on value priced Syrah, with a focus on Australian Shiraz, might produce equally horrifying results. • Santa Carolina Syrah Reserva Rapel Valley Chile 2011

    Snoothrank:

Herbaceous and deep on the nose with slight hints of green olives and green peppercorns lingering under the core of black currant fruit, Pungent, savory, and yet attractive. A touch of fleshiness in the mouth tautly covers the tannic structure here and while the acids are not really noticeable they are sufficient to keep the black cherry, canned... Read More

  • Santa Carolina Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva de Familia 2011

    Snoothrank:

This vineyard produces some of the best CS as a value proposition I have come accross. Their 2006 Resereva blew me away and I could not find any more. Went to get a 2010, but all they had left were 2, 2011's in a store an hour away. Got it. Same great slatey taste, not fruity at all, which I hate in a CS, good finish, but a little slight i... • Santa Carolina Carmenere Reserva de Familia 2011

    Snoothrank:

Spicy on the nose with a nice base of oak joined by aromas of earth, blue fruits violets, green herbs and brambly fruit. Bright and juicy in the mouth, this delivers pretty big flavors of earth, toasty oak, blueberries, sage and cherry fruit. A hint of sweetness adds roundness to the palate which shows fairly soft tannins, though some wood tann... Read More
