Viña Santa Carolina

Viña Santa Carolina was founded in 1875 by spirited, Chilean business visionary, Mr. Luis Pereira Cotapos. The name Santa Carolina was born from his wife and great love, Mrs. Carolina Iñiguez Vicuña. At this time, winemaking in Chile was really coming into its own. Although wine had been present in South America since the 1500s, it wasn’t until the mid 1800’s wine was widely consumed outside of religious purposes. Rich Chilean families were inspired by the French society including their luxury and love for good food and wine. As a result, Pereira decided to start vineyards in Chile with the classical Bordeaux grape varieties such as Cabernet and Merlot, and bring French viticultural expert, Germain Bachelet. The house in which Bachelet resided still remains a part of the Santa Carolina properties. In 1975, Viña Santa Carolina was purchased by the prestigious Larrain family; by 1986 Viña Santa Carolina was one of the top Chilean brands exported to the US Read more »

  • Santa Carolina Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva de Familia 2008

The nose showed intense, spicy blackberry jam, animal musk and coffee notes. On the palate, it was smooth and velvety, yet balanced with wild berries, dark chocolate, and subtle cinnamon. The finish was long and saturating with intense dark chocolate-covered dried cranberry. The tannins slowly melted away on the finish and showed great potential... Read More

  • Santa Carolina Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva de Familia 2008

Very tight nose, but we didn't have it open long. Loads of spice, dark fruit, blackberry and boysenberry. Black plum as well. Odd because of the reserved nose, because it becomes extremely aromatic on the palate. Lots of perfume and floral tones. Lush red and black berry fruit. Violets and lavender. Slight oak. Some cigar tobbaco and it f... Read More

  • Santa Carolina Reserva Valle del Rapel 2010

Smoky and spicy on the nose, with plummy fruit and a vegetal background note. A bit round and sweetly fruited on entry with some dusty tannins that draw the wine down in the mouth, though it does have freshening acidity. The fruit is rather dark and a bit heavy with spicy oak adding more depth in the mouth. The finish seems a bit oak-driven with... Read More
